PR 90-21, Champagne Henri Giraud

Champagne, France

“The Architecture of Time”

Deep gold with a delicate, persistent mousse, PR 90-21 is a Champagne of remarkable presence, unfolding slowly through layers of fruit, flowers and savoury complexity. Ripe pear, red apple and apricot rise from the glass, followed by orange blossom, freshly baked pastry and hints of dried pineapple. Cedar and nutmeg lend a gentle warmth, while a fine chalky character brings definition to the richness. Each moment reveals another detail, making this a Champagne to linger over.

The palate is broad, silky and deeply vinous, with orchard fruit, citrus peel and toasted pastry carried by beautifully integrated acidity. There is generosity without heaviness, the creamy texture gradually giving way to a long, saline finish threaded with delicate spice. Mature reserve wines bring depth and harmony, yet the wine retains a striking freshness. It offers the pleasure of something fully composed, with enough complexity to keep the conversation going long after the first glass.

For when: You want Champagne that feels like a conversation between generations.

Pairs with: Poached turbot with beurre blanc, butter-roasted lobster, scallops with cauliflower purée, truffle risotto, roast chicken with morels or aged Comté.

PR stands for Perpetual Reserve, the living collection of wines that preserves Henri Giraud’s history from one harvest to the next. Rather than emptying the reserve and starting again, the house draws from it and replenishes it, maintaining a continuous connection between younger and older wines. PR 90-21 is made entirely from perpetual reserve wines, bringing together the depth of accumulated vintages and the house’s distinctive affinity with Pinot Noir and Argonne oak.

The designation 90-21 refers to wines spanning 1990 to 2021, rather than a single vintage. Its personality comes from the blending of many harvests, with mature wines contributing savoury detail and texture while younger components sustain freshness. Three years of ageing on the lees bring these elements together, giving the cuvée its sense of completeness.

Henri Giraud’s roots in Aÿ stretch back to the Hémart family’s documented history in 1625. The Giraud name became part of that story when Léon Giraud married Madeleine Hémart in the early twentieth century, helping rebuild the family vineyards following the devastation of phylloxera and war. Today, Emmanuelle Giraud represents the thirteenth generation, leading a house whose distinctive Champagnes combine family continuity with an unusually inquisitive approach to winemaking.

Aÿ, one of Champagne’s celebrated Grand Cru villages, lies at the heart of the house’s identity. Its chalk soils and reputation for expressive Pinot Noir provide the foundation for wines of breadth and structure. Equally important is the Argonne forest, where the house sources oak for its barrels. Claude Giraud revived this historic connection in 1990, exploring how the origin and character of the wood could complement individual wines.

Cellar master and managing director Sébastien Le Golvet continues that work, paying close attention to barrel selection and toasting as well as the development of the house’s perpetual reserves. Forest conservation forms a practical part of this philosophy: Henri Giraud’s partnership with France’s National Forestry Office supports oak replanting in the Argonne. The result is a highly individual style, recognised for its generous texture, savoury complexity and capacity to combine power with freshness.

PR 90-21 is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, composed entirely of perpetual reserve wines spanning 1990–2021. These reserves are progressively replenished over successive harvests, retaining mature wine within the blend and building layers of flavour that cannot be attributed to a single growing season.

Fermentation in fine-grained Argonne oak barrels contributes to the cuvée’s texture and subtle spice. The selection and blending of reserve wines bring together fruit, maturity and freshness, creating the broad yet focused character that defines this release.

Following blending and the second fermentation in bottle, the Champagne spends three years ageing on its lees before disgorgement. This extended contact develops the fine mousse, pastry notes and rounded mouthfeel. The October 2024 disgorgement reviewed by James Suckling received a dosage of 5g/L. It is already drinking beautifully, with sufficient concentration and balance for further bottle development.

Alcohol: 12%. Dosage: 5g/L for the October 2024 disgorgement.
