Old Vine Field Blend, Garage Wine Company

Cauquenes, Maule Valley, Chile

Solera Red

This is a Chilean field blend with old-vine soul, wild fruit and a beautifully savoury edge. Made solera-style from Cariñena, Garnacha, Monastrell, Cinsault and País, it opens with redcurrant, blackcurrant, plum and rose petal, before pipe tobacco, dried herbs, baking spice, leather and turned earth begin to gather.

The palate is bright, textured and full of movement, with juicy red and blue fruit, fine tannins and a smoky, gently rustic finish. There is polish here, but also that unmistakable Garage Wine Company feeling: handmade, old-vine, dry-farmed and quietly rebellious.

For when you want a red with character, freshness and a proper story in the glass.
Pairs with grilled lamb, pork belly, roast chicken, charcuterie, lentils, smoky aubergine, mushroom tacos, or pizza with roasted peppers.
If this wine were… a secret, it would be passed across a Maule table at dusk, full of red fruit, old barrels, warm earth and something worth listening to.

Garage Wine Company began quite literally in Pilar and Derek’s garage, before growing into one of Chile’s most respected small-scale producers. Working with old, dry-farmed vineyards and small growers across Maule and Itata, the team focuses on native yeasts, manual punch downs, small lots and basket pressing. Their wines are rooted in community, regenerative farming and the revival of Chile’s old-vine heritage.

Toronto-born Derek Mossman Knapp originally went to Chile to ski, found snow, love and wine and never looked back. In 2001 he co-founded The Garage Wine Company together with his wife Pilar, and oenologist Dr. Alvaro Peña.

Focussing on the Coastal Range in the Maule, they established a ‘revival’ winemaking programme focused on rediscovering old, neglected parcels of vines, combined with small batch experiments. These ancient, dry-farmed vines, with deep, complex root systems are what makes this project so special.

For over 20 years, working with small vigneron partners who use ancestral knowledge passed down through generations, they have slowly nurtured these parcels, vine by vine using regenerative farming techniques. The wines are thoughtfully crafted with wild yeasts, in small lots with manual punch downs and a small, basket press.

The Garage Wine Company has become an important part of Chile’s dynamic artisanal wine scene, and their collection of award-winning, individual and sometimes limited wines is something truly special. “Garage is Garage, because sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine”.

The grapes were naturally fermented in open top fermenters with native yeasts with manual punching down of the cap and manual pressing. A small portion of the wine (1/5) was vinified as whole bunches, which underwent the traditional practice of treading -with clean feet- resulting in a portion with higher tannins and VA, which complemented the remainder of the barrels. The wine was aged in a solera system from 2016 to 2022 in barrels of third use or more.
