Extra Cognac, Frapin

Cognac, France

The Copper Library

A decanter of Cognac presented in a luxury red gift box

Quietly opulent and beautifully composed, Frapin Extra reveals the depth that only decades of patient maturation can bring. Mahogany in colour with warm copper reflections, it opens with concentrated candied apricot and the mellow, rich fruit character of aged Port. Fragrant cedar and cigar-box notes emerge gradually, weaving through the fruit with an understated woody complexity. This is a Cognac that rewards time in the glass, each moment revealing another detail.

The palate is supple and velvety, with generous flavour carried by remarkable finesse. Preserved fruit and mellow oak unfold slowly, joined by the savoury, gently nutty character of mature rancio. Its richness feels seamless, with a delicate drying touch bringing definition to an exceptionally long finish. Presented in a decanter and red gift box, Extra makes a distinguished gift for a Cognac enthusiast or a fitting centrepiece for an unhurried evening. Fully matured before bottling, it is ready to enjoy neat, allowing its layers to develop naturally in the glass.

For when: Dinner has ended, the conversation has deepened, and there is no reason to hurry.

Pairs with: Vanilla crème brûlée, apple tarte Tatin, caramelised pear tart, dark chocolate fondant, chocolate and banana tart, or praline ice cream.

Extra draws on the ancestral reserves preserved by Pierre Frapin and successive generations of his family. Exclusively grown, distilled and matured on the estate in Grande Champagne, it spends several decades in dry cellars, a defining influence on its finesse and aromatic development. The decanter and red presentation box give this deeply traditional Cognac an appropriately elegant finish.

As a non-vintage blend, Extra brings together mature eaux-de-vie selected for their complementary qualities. Its identity comes from the accumulated character of long ageing and the judgement of the cellar master, creating a harmonious whole from the family’s treasured reserves.

The Frapin family settled near Segonzac in the Charente in 1270, beginning a history of winegrowing that would develop into one of Cognac’s enduring family traditions. Centred on Château Fontpinot, the house retains a close connection between its vineyards, distillery and cellars, with every Cognac made exclusively from estate-grown grapes.

Its 240 hectares of vines lie entirely within Grande Champagne, Cognac’s Premier Cru. Chalk and limestone soils help regulate water availability, while the region’s Atlantic influence shapes the growing season. Ugni Blanc thrives here, producing the fresh, naturally acidic wines from which Frapin develops its long-lived eaux-de-vie.

Cellar master Patrice Piveteau oversees a style built on distillation with the lees, careful oak maturation and patient blending. Dry and humid cellars provide different conditions for ageing, giving the house a broad palette of textures and aromas. For Extra, the focus is on the elegance developed in dry cellars and the complexity of its oldest family reserves.

Made from Ugni Blanc grown on Frapin’s Grande Champagne estate, Extra begins with grapes pressed and fermented into a fresh, low-alcohol wine. All stages, from growing the fruit to distillation and maturation, take place at the estate, maintaining continuity between vineyard and finished Cognac.

The wine undergoes traditional double distillation on its lees in Charentais copper pot stills. The distillers select the heart of the spirit through tasting, with the retained lees contributing aromatic depth and richness that develop during maturation.

Frapin uses Limousin oak for ageing, moving its eaux-de-vie through barrels of different ages as their character evolves. Extra’s components mature for several decades in the estate’s dry cellars before careful selection and blending. This prolonged maturation develops its candied-fruit concentration, refined woody notes and distinctive rancio, while preserving an elegant, supple texture.
