Les Grands Assemblages 30YO Armagnac, Darroze (Gift Box)

Bas-Armagnac, Gascony, France

The Amber Library

Contemplative and richly layered, Darroze’s thirty-year-old Armagnac draws you in with toffee, candied fruit and dried orange peel, followed by cocoa, espresso and clove. Beneath these generous aromas lies the emerging savoury complexity of rancio, the distinctive character that develops through prolonged ageing. Seasoned oak adds depth, giving the bouquet a quietly commanding presence that rewards time in the glass.

The palate is concentrated and mellow, with integrated warmth and a firm tannic grip that gives shape to the richness. Dried fruit unfolds into roasted coffee and bittersweet cocoa, while citrus peel brings definition to a persistent, spice-laden finish. This is a substantial, mature Armagnac for those who enjoy the interplay of fruit, oak and savoury detail. Its development has already taken place in cask, making it ready to appreciate now, served neat and savoured slowly.

For when: Old friends gather, and the best stories deserve another telling.

Pairs with: Dark chocolate ganache tart, walnut cake, espresso crème brûlée, candied orange dipped in chocolate, prune and almond clafoutis or mature Gouda.

At thirty years, Les Grands Assemblages reaches a stage where dried and candied fruit, pronounced spice and the first notes of rancio become central to its character. Different origins and harvest years are brought together to capture that maturity, with the age statement referring to the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend. Presented in a Darroze gift box, it makes a thoughtful choice for an important birthday or a long-awaited reunion.

Darroze’s history is rooted in the food and hospitality of Gascony. Through his father Jean’s restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, Francis Darroze discovered the region’s remarkable variety of wines and eaux-de-vie. From the late 1960s, he explored the small estates of Bas-Armagnac, selecting spirits whose individuality deserved to be preserved through careful maturation and bottling.
The house now works with around thirty estates, drawing on the diversity of Bas-Armagnac’s sandy soils and distinctive tawny sands. These origins provide a broad range of aromatic characters, which develop further in the family’s cellars at Roquefort and Labastide-d’Armagnac. The relationship between vineyard, spirit and wood remains fundamental to Darroze’s work.
Marc Darroze continues the family tradition, overseeing selection, ageing and blending. His approach combines respect for individual estate character with an understanding of how different eaux-de-vie complement one another. Les Grands Assemblages puts that blending experience at the centre of the bottle, exploring the changing personality of Armagnac across successive decades.

This assemblage combines Armagnacs made from Baco and Ugni Blanc, selected from different origins and harvest years. Every component has matured for at least thirty years, giving the blend its developed fruit character and depth.
Extended ageing in oak allows the spirit’s youthful warmth to soften while building spice, structure and the beginnings of rancio complexity. Darroze’s cellar work considers barrel character, aeration and the influence of humidity, all of which affect how an eau-de-vie evolves.
The mature components are selected and blended to balance concentration with aromatic detail. Bottled at 43%, the finished Armagnac retains the presence to carry its substantial flavours and is presented in a boxed 70cl bottle.
Alcohol: 43%. Bottle size: 70cl. Minimum age: 30 years. Vegan.
