20 Year Old Tawny Port Gift Box, Barros

Duoro, Portugal

Fireside Gold

Richly layered and wonderfully inviting, Barros’s 20 Year Old Tawny brings together the generosity of ripe fruit and the intricate pleasures of long ageing in oak. Its glowing amber colour introduces aromas of dried fig, apricot and candied orange, followed by walnut, honey and soft caramel. Nutmeg, gentle vanilla and a suggestion of polished wood add depth, creating a fragrant, beautifully developed Port that rewards taking your time.

The palate is sumptuous and rounded, with a silky flow of dried fruit, toffee and warming spice. Fresh acidity keeps the sweetness in balance, while a savoury nuttiness adds definition and carries into a long, delicately spiced finish. There is richness here, but also a lovely sense of lift, making a second small glass particularly tempting. Matured before release and ready to enjoy, this gift-boxed bottle makes a thoughtful present for a Port lover or an indulgent finishing touch to a leisurely dinner.

For when: The fire is glowing, the conversation is flowing, and dessert deserves an encore.

Pairs with: Serve with walnut tart, crème brûlée, tarte Tatin, sticky toffee pudding, orange and almond cake or aged Comté.

The “20 Year Old” designation describes a carefully assembled blend of Ports from different harvests, matured in oak to achieve the character and complexity associated with that age. Blending brings together the freshness of younger wines and the concentrated, nutty depth of older reserves. It is a particularly rewarding stage in tawny Port’s development, retaining generous fruit alongside the flavours created by patient cask ageing.

Barros traces its origins to 1913, when Manuel de Almeida established the Port trading business Almeida & Companhia. Manoel Moreira Barros subsequently became a central figure in its development, with his name becoming the identity of the house. Over more than a century, Barros has built a particular reputation for mature tawny Ports and Colheitas, wines in which patient ageing reveals extraordinary layers of flavour.

Its wines originate in Portugal’s Douro Valley, where steep slopes, schist soils and hot summers shape the character of the region’s traditional grape varieties. The concentration developed in these demanding conditions provides the substance for long maturation, while retaining freshness is essential to the balance of the finished Port.

Winemaker Carlos Alves oversees a style founded on careful selection, cask management and blending. Barros’s expertise with wood-aged wines is central to its appeal: knowing when to preserve a wine’s youthful fruit, when to allow further development and how to bring different reserves together. The resulting Ports offer generous flavour, aromatic complexity and an inviting sense of harmony.

Produced from traditional Douro red grape varieties, with grapes harvested by hand at suitable ripeness. This is a non-vintage blend, drawing on wines from different harvests to create a consistent expression of the house’s 20 Year Old Tawny style.

After destemming and crushing, the grapes undergo skin maceration and fermentation, with pumping over to extract colour, aromas and tannins. Grape spirit is added at the desired level of sweetness, arresting fermentation and preserving natural grape sugars while increasing the alcoholic strength.

The component wines mature in oak casks for varying periods before blending. Gradual exposure to oxygen develops the amber colour and characteristic flavours of nuts, dried fruit and caramel. Bottled ready to drink, it requires no further cellaring and is best served slightly chilled, at around 14–16°C, to bring its freshness and aromatic detail into focus.

Alcohol: 20%. Residual sugar: 122g/L. Total acidity: 4.74g/L. pH: 3.56. Recommended drinking window: ready to drink on release.
