2025 Verdeca 'Talo', San Marzano

Puglia, Italy

This is a beautifully fresh southern Italian white from Verdeca, a relatively rare Puglian grape with a natural affinity for seafood. White flowers, crisp green apple and pear lead the nose, followed by lemon peel, a touch of honey, soft vanilla and a gentle almond note. It feels bright and aromatic, but with more texture and charm than a simple crisp white.

On the palate, it is full-flavoured, fresh and gently creamy, with orchard fruit, citrus lift and a thirst-quenching mineral finish. A short spell in French oak adds softness and polish without taking away the wine’s clean, coastal freshness. A brilliant choice for anyone who wants something a little different from Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio, but still crisp, easy to love and ready for the table.

For when
Seafood needs a bright Italian white with texture.

Pairs with
Grilled prawns, shellfish, sea bass, crab linguine, mussels, lemon roast chicken, courgette risotto, burrata, seafood pasta or fish with light sauces.

San Marzano’s Talò range is designed to highlight individual Puglian varieties with clarity and charm. This Verdeca comes from hilly vineyards in northern Taranto, around 100m above sea level, where warm southern days and cooler nights help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. It is a polished, modern expression from one of Puglia’s most important producers, rooted in local character but made with broad, easy appeal.

In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish ‘Cantine San Marzano’. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir.

The 2025 Verdeca 'Talò' is 100% Verdeca from Puglia IGP. The fruit comes from hilly vineyards in the northern part of the province of Taranto, in Salento, at around 100m above sea level. The area benefits from strong day-to-night temperature variation, helping preserve freshness and aromatic lift in the grapes.

The vines are trained on espalier, with vineyards planted on relatively thin, fine-textured soils. Harvest takes place around mid-September. The grapes receive a short cold pre-maceration of 6 to 8 hours before fermentation, which is completed in French oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 3 months in French oak with periodic bâtonnage to build texture and roundness.

The result is fresh, floral and softly creamy, with white flowers, green apple, citrus, honeyed notes and a clean mineral finish. The oak is gentle rather than dominant, giving the wine polish and a smooth feel while keeping Verdeca’s natural freshness at the centre. Serve well chilled with seafood, shellfish, grilled fish or lighter Mediterranean dishes.
