2025 Soave Classico 'Cuvee XX', Guerrieri Rizzardi

Soave, Veneto, Italy

Fragrant and quietly expressive, with pear, white peach and fresh citrus lifted by delicate blossom and a hint of almond. Beneath the fruit lies a cool, stony character that gives this youthful Soave a sense of precision and place.

The palate is dry, bright and beautifully balanced, combining juicy orchard fruit with lively acidity and a gently textured lees-aged feel. Garganega brings freshness and subtle savoury depth, while Chardonnay adds breadth without weighing the wine down. Clean, mineral and immensely drinkable, this is a versatile Italian white with far more personality than its price might suggest.

For when: The table is outside, and lunch has nowhere to be.

Pairs with: Grilled sea bass, spaghetti alle vongole, vegetable risotto, sushi, roast chicken or fresh goat’s cheese.

Guerrieri Rizzardi’s Soave estate occupies 15 hectares of well-exposed hillside vineyards around Costeggiola and beneath Soave Castle. Cuvée XX brings together fruit from these prized Classico sites, balancing Garganega’s freshness and local character with the rounded texture of Chardonnay. The name XX refers to the twentieth century, when the Soave estate became part of the Rizzardi family’s historic holdings.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is a historic, family-owned Veneto producer with vineyard estates in Bardolino, Valpolicella and Soave. The present name was created in 1913 when the Guerrieri and Rizzardi families were united, bringing together centuries of agricultural and winemaking heritage. Today, the estate is led by thirteenth-generation family members Agostino and Giuseppe Rizzardi.

The family’s presence in Soave began in the 1970s. Count Antonio Rizzardi purchased land around the Tenda cru in 1977, followed by the Costeggiola property several years later. The estate now comprises 15 hectares and its own cellar within the Soave Classico zone, allowing the family to control the journey from vineyard to bottle.

Around 30 individual plots are spread across Costeggiola hill and the slopes near Soave Castle. Limestone-rich soils over volcanic rock, warm exposures and variations in elevation give the wines both ripeness and mineral freshness. Garganega remains at the heart of the estate, supported by Chardonnay and a small amount of Trebbiano di Soave. The house style favours clarity, balance and elegance, making Cuvée XX a dependable introduction to both the producer and the distinctive hillside wines of Soave Classico.

The 2025 Cuvée XX combines 79% Garganega with 21% Chardonnay from the family’s 15-hectare Soave Classico estate. The fruit comes from vineyards around Costeggiola, Casale and Ferra, including south and west-facing slopes near Soave Castle. The vines are between four and thirty years old, growing in silty, sandy hillside soils rich in limestone over volcanic subsoil.

Harvesting took place over several weeks, using both hand and machine picking according to the vineyard. The destemmed grapes were pressed before fermentation, which lasted ten to twelve days at 15 to 16°C in temperature-controlled concrete vats. The wine then spent more than three months on its lees in concrete and stainless-steel tanks, building texture while preserving freshness.

12% alcohol, 5.47g/l total acidity and 2.9g/l residual sugar.
