Greywacke is the Marlborough project of Kevin Judd, former chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay and one of the architects of modern New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Sourced from select vineyards in the Southern Valleys and central Wairau, the fruit benefits from low yields, varied soils and careful harvesting for balance rather than overt intensity. Judd’s hands-off approach, including wild ferments and extended lees contact for some parcels, brings texture and complexity to the finished wine. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that respects Marlborough’s identity while elevating it, expressive, thoughtful and quietly confident.

Greywacke was established in 2009 by Kevin Judd, one of the most influential figures in New Zealand wine. Born in England and raised in Australia, Kevin studied winemaking at Roseworthy Agricultural College before moving to New Zealand. In 1985, he became the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay and spent 25 vintages helping establish Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc as an internationally recognised style.

Greywacke is Kevin’s personal, family-owned project, named after the hard grey sandstone found throughout Marlborough’s riverbeds and vineyard soils. Working with trusted growers, the winery draws fruit from carefully selected sites across the Wairau Plains and Southern Valleys, using contrasting soils and microclimates to create depth and balance.

The range reflects Kevin’s belief that Marlborough can deliver far more than simple aromatic intensity. His classic Sauvignon Blanc combines pristine fruit with texture, savoury detail and mineral freshness, while Wild Sauvignon explores indigenous fermentation and barrel ageing. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling complete the portfolio. Kevin is also an acclaimed photographer, and his striking images of New Zealand’s vineyards and landscapes give Greywacke its distinctive visual identity. The wines are trusted for their consistency, precision and quietly individual character.

The 2025 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc is made from fruit grown across prime sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and central Wairau Plains, specifically around Woodbourne, Renwick and Rapaura. The soils range from young alluvial deposits filled with greywacke river stones to the older, denser clay loams of the Southern Valleys.

The grapes were harvested largely by machine during cool night-time conditions. Picking began on 24 March and continued for three weeks, allowing each vineyard parcel to be collected at its preferred level of ripeness. The fruit was transported directly to the winery in the Omaka Valley and lightly pressed to obtain a modest volume of high-quality juice.

After cold settling and racking, fermentation took place primarily in stainless-steel tanks using cultured yeast. The individual vineyard parcels remained on their lees until late May, when the final blend was assembled. The wine was bottled in early August.
