2025 Malbec '1300', Andeluna

Mendoza and Valle de Uco, Argentina

Mountain Violet

Bright, fragrant and brimming with fruit, Andeluna’s 1300 brings an appealing mountain freshness to Malbec’s generous character. Violet leads into ripe red plum, blackberry and strawberry, with a leafy lift and subtle mineral undertone. Gentle hints of vanilla and sweet spice sit behind the fruit, adding warmth and depth while leaving the wine’s youthful fragrance centre stage.

The palate is rounded and supple, with a generous middle, soft tannins and refreshing acidity that keeps each mouthful lively. Juicy berry flavours unfold easily, finishing with a delicate savoury edge and a lingering impression of fresh plum. This is Malbec with immediate drinking appeal, equally at home beside a sizzling steak or a relaxed supper with friends. Enjoy it young, while its fruit and floral character are at their most expressive.

For when: The grill is glowing and there is always room for one more at the table.

Pairs with: Bavette steak with chimichurri, beef empanadas, rosemary lamb chops, grilled portobello mushrooms, smoky aubergine burgers or pork sausages with lentils.

The name ‘1300’ celebrates the altitude of the vineyards, around 1,300 metres above sea level in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Strong mountain sunlight and cold nights help build vivid colour and aromatic intensity while retaining freshness. Andeluna itself brings together the Andes and luna, the Spanish word for moon, capturing the landscape that shapes these wines.

Andeluna was founded in 2003 through a partnership between the Reina Rutini family and American businessman Ward Lay. Located in Gualtallary, Tupungato, beneath the Andes, the winery was acquired by the Barale family in 2013. Its identity centres on mountain-grown wines that combine Argentina’s generous fruit with the freshness and definition of high-altitude vineyards.
The estate’s rocky, alluvial soils contain sand, lime and calcareous material, with excellent drainage and relatively little rainfall. Intense daylight gives way to cold nights, creating a marked difference between daytime and night-time temperatures. Vineyard care is adapted to these conditions, with careful water management and attention to the canopy helping the grapes ripen evenly.
Chief winemaker Jimena López brings experience from more than seven countries, including France, Germany and the United States. Her approach places vineyard care and meticulous winemaking at the heart of quality. The 1300 range offers an accessible introduction to Andeluna, emphasising fresh fruit, varietal fragrance and a restrained contribution from oak.

Made entirely from Malbec, the wine draws on vineyards in Tupungato at approximately 1,300 metres above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand and the bunches carefully selected. Drip irrigation supplies water according to the vines’ needs, while canopy management controls exposure and supports balanced ripening.
After destemming, the grapes undergo a cold maceration before fermentation. Natural and selected yeasts are used in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at approximately 26°C, preserving the wine’s vivid fruit while extracting colour and supple tannins.
Maturation takes place in previously used French oak barrels for three months, followed by a further three months of cellaring before release. This brief oak ageing rounds out the texture and introduces gentle spice without overwhelming the fruit.
Residual sugar: 5.4g/L. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
