2025 Kin Semillon, Alkina

Barossa Valley, Australia

This is bright, textural Barossa Semillon with real spark. Lemon sherbet, lime zest and grapefruit peel lead the way, followed by jasmine, lemongrass, wet pebble and a subtle ginger-like lift. It feels vivid and aromatic, but not simple; there is a savoury, stony edge underneath the citrus that gives it extra interest.

On the palate, it is fresh and energetic, with natural acidity, pithy citrus grip and a lovely sense of weight through the middle. A little skin contact and lees work bring texture, while stainless steel and old oak keep the style clean, dry and quietly layered. A brilliant white for anyone who wants something more distinctive than Sauvignon, but still crisp, refreshing and easy to love.

For when
Seafood needs a sharper, smarter white.

Pairs with
Kingfish crudo, oysters, grilled prawns, roast chicken with lemon, Thai herb salads, asparagus risotto, goat’s cheese or salt and pepper squid.

Alkina’s Kin range captures the estate’s most immediate and drinkable side while still carrying the producer’s hallmark clarity and texture. In 2025, severe frost meant the Semillon fruit came from Vine Vale rather than Alkina’s own blocks, but the result is still unmistakably thoughtful: bright, precise, savoury and beautifully handled. It is a fresh reminder of how good Barossa Semillon can be when treated with restraint and intent.

Alkina is one of the most compelling names in the modern Barossa, based near Greenock on a certified organic and biodynamic estate with old vines, ancient soils and a deep focus on place. The property combines heritage and precision: old vineyard material dating back to the 1950s sits alongside detailed soil mapping, small-parcel work and a winemaking approach that values freshness as much as flavour.

The estate is known for Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Semillon, with its most celebrated wines exploring tiny geological differences through carefully separated blocks and “Polygons”. That attention to detail has helped Alkina build a reputation for Barossa wines with purity, savoury complexity and mineral shape rather than excess weight.

The Kin range offers a more immediate way into the estate’s style. These wines are made for pleasure first, but still carry the same thoughtful approach: careful picking, gentle handling, natural fermentation where appropriate and a clear sense of balance. For customers, Alkina offers Barossa with confidence, energy and a fine-wine mindset.

The 2025 Kin Semillon is 100% Semillon from Vine Vale in the Barossa Valley.

The season was marked by frost, low yields and a long, dry period that brought sugar and flavour maturity earlier than expected. Early harvesting helped retain freshness and high natural acidity, while the reduced yields brought added concentration.

After hand-picking, the fruit went directly to press, with free-run juice and pressings kept separate. The free-run component was settled, racked and fermented in stainless steel, with gentle lees stirring after fermentation. The pressings were fermented on heavy solids to build texture, while a small parcel was fermented on skins for 12 days. The final blend includes 10% pressings component and 10% skin-contact component, followed by partial malolactic fermentation and ageing in stainless steel and old oak. Alcohol is 13%, production is 500 dozen, and the wine is ready to drink now or hold.
