2025 Il Pumo Primitivo, San Marzano

Salento, Puglia, Italy

The Puglian Welcome

Plush, warming and irresistibly generous, Il Pumo opens with ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry, layered with rosemary, cinnamon and a gentle touch of vanilla. The palate is full and rounded, with fleshy dark fruit, soft tannins and a subtle sweetness that gives the wine an especially smooth texture. It’s rich without becoming heavy, bold without feeling demanding, finishing savoury, softly spiced and wonderfully comforting.

For when: the pasta is piled high, the table is crowded and one bottle may not be enough.

Pairs with: beef ragù, lasagne, grilled sausages, barbecued pork, meatballs, aubergine parmigiana, game or mature cheeses.

Il Pumo takes its name from the traditional ceramic ornament found on balconies and rooftops across Puglia, where it symbolises prosperity, renewal and abundance. It is a fitting name for this generous expression of Salento Primitivo. The vines grow around 100 metres above sea level in Puglia’s warm, dry climate, rooted in shallow clay soils scattered with rock. Fermentation and maturation take place entirely in stainless steel, preserving the grape’s ripe fruit, soft texture and easy southern Italian charm.

San Marzano began in 1962 when 19 growers from San Marzano di San Giuseppe joined together to establish a shared winery. Their aim was to demonstrate that Puglia’s indigenous varieties could produce distinctive wines in their own right, rather than simply providing deeply coloured blending material for producers elsewhere in Europe.

The cooperative has since grown to include more than 1,200 growers, giving its winemaking team access to vineyards spread across a wide range of soils, elevations and microclimates. The warm Mediterranean climate, cooling coastal influences and naturally low rainfall are particularly well suited to Primitivo, which develops generous fruit and supple texture under the intense Puglian sun.

Winemakers Caterina Bellanova and Davide Ragusa combine this traditional vineyard knowledge with careful temperature control and modern cellar techniques. The San Marzano range extends from vibrant, accessible wines to concentrated, age-worthy expressions from mature vines. Il Pumo sits at the approachable heart of the collection, offering the richness and warmth associated with Salento Primitivo in a polished, uncomplicated style made for generous food and relaxed drinking.

The 2025 Il Pumo is made from 100% Primitivo grown approximately 100 metres above sea level in Salento. The vineyards experience high average temperatures and relatively low rainfall. Their shallow clay soils contain a high proportion of rock, providing natural drainage while retaining enough moisture to support the vines through the dry growing season.

The grapes were harvested during the first week of September after reaching full ripeness. They underwent temperature-controlled maceration for approximately 10 days to extract colour, ripe fruit and fine tannins. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using selected yeasts.

The wine was matured entirely in stainless steel and received no oak, preserving Primitivo’s vibrant fruit and naturally rounded character.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Residual sugar: 10g/L. Grape variety: 100% Primitivo. Closure: screwcap. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
