2025 Gavi di Gavi Rovereto, Michele Chiarlo

Gavi, Piedmont, Italy

This is Gavi with extra class, drawn from one of the appellation’s historic cru sites. White flowers, golden apple and pear lead the nose, followed by lemon zest, chive, wet stone and a cool mineral edge. It has the clean brightness you want from Cortese, but Rovereto gives it more depth, shape and quiet confidence than a simple crisp white.

On the palate, it is fresh, fragrant and beautifully balanced, with orchard fruit, citrus lift and a long, savoury mineral finish. The texture is rounded but never heavy, and the acidity keeps everything precise and refreshing. A brilliant white for seafood, spring dishes and anyone who loves Italian whites with poise, purity and a proper sense of place.

For when
Seafood needs a crisp white with Piedmont polish.

Pairs with
Spaghetti alle vongole, grilled prawns, swordfish carpaccio, seafood risotto, lemon sole, crab salad, veal tartare, asparagus, goat’s cheese or fresh herb salads.

Rovereto is one of the few historic cru sites of Gavi, known for its dark red clay marl, stony soils and elegant, mineral expression of Cortese. Michele Chiarlo’s version comes from a five-hectare vineyard in the commune of Gavi, where altitude, south-east exposure and careful fruit selection help build freshness, fragrance and length. It is a classic example of why top Gavi can feel so much more serious than everyday Italian white.

Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont’s most respected family producers, founded in 1956 with a clear focus on the region’s finest native grapes and vineyard sites. The estate works across Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi, with important holdings in celebrated crus including Cannubi, Cerequio and Rovereto.

Today, the Chiarlo family continues to build on that reputation with wines that balance regional identity, polish and drinkability. The philosophy is centred on expressing terroir rather than overpowering it, with sustainable vineyard work and careful cellar handling shaping wines that feel clear, precise and true to their origins.

While the name is widely associated with Barolo, Barbera and Nizza, Michele Chiarlo’s Gavi is a key part of the story. Rovereto shows Cortese at its most refined: floral, mineral and quietly structured.

The 2025 Gavi di Gavi Rovereto is 100% Cortese from the Rovereto vineyard in the commune of Gavi. The vineyard covers five hectares, with south-east exposure at around 400 to 500m above sea level. Soils are dark red clay marl with stones, helping give the wine its mineral freshness and structured feel.

The 2025 vintage began with early, even budbreak after a mild, rainy winter and wet late spring, which built useful water reserves before a long, hot summer. The final ripening period was dry, with strong light and marked day-to-night temperature differences helping preserve acidity and aromatic detail. Cortese was harvested by hand from 15 to 19 September.

In the cellar, a portion of the grapes was cold pressed to capture delicate aromas, followed by soft pressing and fermentation at 16 to 18°C. The wine was then aged for at least five months on its yeasts in stainless steel before further bottle refinement. The result is fresh, mineral and ready to enjoy, with white flowers, golden apple, citrus and a long savoury finish. Alcohol is listed at 12.5%, and the wine is closed under cork.
