2025 Ferrum Albarino, Bodegas As Laxas

Galicia, Spain

Galician Pearl

Bright, fragrant, and immediately inviting, Ferrum brings together juicy orchard fruit and the refreshing citrus character that makes Albariño so appealing. Fresh apple and ripe apricot lead the way, followed by lemon zest and delicate white flowers. There is an attractive contrast between the rounded fruit and the wine’s more restrained mineral character, giving it enough detail to hold your attention while remaining effortlessly enjoyable.

The palate is supple and gently rounded, with a silky touch that softens its lively acidity. Apple and stone-fruit flavours fill the middle of the mouth before citrus freshness brings a clean, appetising finish. It is a versatile white with enough texture for seafood at the dinner table and enough brightness to make a lovely first glass. Enjoy it young for its fragrance and fruit, particularly alongside something fresh from the fishmonger.

For when: The prawns are sizzling, the lemon is sliced, and lunch looks likely to last all afternoon.

Pairs with: Garlic prawns, grilled sea bass with lemon, crab linguine, mussels in white wine, salt-and-pepper squid, or a warm asparagus and goat’s cheese tart.

Ferrum comes from Bodegas As Laxas in Galicia’s Rías Baixas region, where Albariño is the defining white grape. The family’s home is Arbo, beside the River Miño in Condado do Tea, close to the Portuguese border. This inland corner of the appellation combines Atlantic influence with sheltered, sunny slopes, providing an appealing setting for wines that balance ripe fruit with freshness.

91/100, James Suckling “Seashell mineral note with subtle aromas of smoked herbs to the white fruit. Tangy and textured on the palate with a medium body and a supple, saline finish. A delicious albarino.”

Bodegas As Laxas has roots in a local winemaking tradition dating back to 1862. The modern family business began in 1975 under the Simón Ferro family, who went on to become founding members of the Rías Baixas regulatory council. Based in Arbo, the winery has helped establish the reputation of Albariño while maintaining its connection to the landscape and traditions of southern Galicia.

The estate has approximately 60 hectares of its own vineyards, with Albariño the principal variety. Its vineyards include south-facing terraces above the River Miño, where granite-derived soils and good exposure support aromatic, flavourful grapes. Atlantic weather remains influential, while the slopes and varied sites give the family a range of growing conditions to work with.

The approach combines generations of vineyard knowledge with modern cellar technology, placing emphasis on clean fruit, balance and regional character. The family also participates in sustainability research, including a project exploring how solar panels can operate above vineyards alongside grape production. It is a practical extension of their commitment to the land on which the business depends.

The 2025 Ferrum is made from 100% Albariño within the Rías Baixas denomination. The variety’s aromatic fruit and natural acidity shape the wine, combining apple and stone-fruit flavours with the freshness that defines its style.

Ferrum is made using temperature-controlled stainless-steel fermentation, an approach that preserves the grape’s fragrance and fruit character. The emphasis is on a fresh, approachable white with a rounded texture and a lively finish, intended to be enjoyed in its youth.
