2025 Côtes du Rhône Blanc 'Parallèle 45', Paul Jaboulet Aîné

Côtes du Rhône, Rhone Valley, France

Latitude of Gold

Generous, fragrant and beautifully bright, Parallèle 45 Blanc brings the warmth of the Rhône into a glass full of freshness. White peach and ripe apple mingle with lemon zest and grapefruit, lifted by orange blossom and a delicate suggestion of wild herbs. A little tropical fruit adds richness to the aromatic layers, while subtle notes of fresh pastry and a stony undertone give this inviting white more depth than its easy charm first suggests.

The palate opens with a soft, creamy texture, unfolding into juicy fruit and a gently rounded, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Fresh acidity runs through the richness, gathering pace towards a lively citrus finish that leaves the mouth refreshed. Six months on the fine lees lend substance and polish, making this equally appealing as a generous aperitif or a white to linger over at dinner. Enjoy its youthful fragrance now, with enough balance to develop gracefully over the next few years.

For when: The chicken is roasting, friends are arriving, and the first glass deserves your full attention.

Pairs with: Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, cod with tarragon beurre blanc, crab and lemon risotto, garlic butter prawns, leek and Gruyère tart, or a creamy blanquette de veau.

Parallèle 45 takes its name from the latitude that crosses the Rhône Valley close to Jaboulet’s cellars, halfway between the equator and the North Pole. A fixture of the house since 1950, it brings together five classic Rhône white varieties in a blend that balances floral fragrance, generous fruit and refreshing definition.

Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain-l’Hermitage, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the Rhône Valley’s historic names. Successive generations of the Jaboulet family built its reputation before the Frey family acquired the house in 2006, beginning a new chapter of investment in its vineyards and cellars.

The house’s roots lie in the northern Rhône, with vineyards across celebrated appellations including Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Cornas. This varied landscape encompasses steep slopes, granite and river terraces, providing the foundations for a broad range of distinctive wines. Parallèle 45 extends that Rhône expertise into an accessible blend, drawing on clay-limestone soils and rounded alluvial pebbles.

The transition towards organic farming gathered momentum under Caroline Frey, with the estate vineyards achieving organic certification in 2016. Care for soil health and biodiversity sits alongside precise cellar work, with an emphasis on freshness and clarity. The organically grown Parallèle 45 range carries that philosophy into bottles made for regular enjoyment.

The 2025 blend comprises 30% Grenache Blanc, 25% Roussanne, 20% Viognier, 15% Clairette and 10% Marsanne. Organically grown vines average around 40 years of age and stand on clay-limestone soils and alluvial deposits containing rounded pebbles. Each variety is harvested and vinified separately to capture its individual character at suitable ripeness.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks at low temperatures, preserving the delicate floral aromas and fresh fruit. Keeping the varieties separate during vinification allows their different contributions to be balanced in the finished blend.

The wine matures for six months on its fine lees in stainless steel. This adds gentle creaminess and depth while retaining the lively citrus character that carries the finish. Ready to enjoy on release, it has an indicated ageing potential of three to five years.

Alcohol: 13%. Organic. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2030.
