2025 Cala Reale Vermentino, Sella & Mosca

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinian Sunlight

Bright, generous and touched by the sea, Cala Reale captures the easy charm of Sardinia with a beautifully refreshing edge. White peach and crisp green apple lead the way, followed by hints of pineapple, delicate white flowers and aromatic Mediterranean herbs. There is a lovely contrast between the ripeness of the fruit and the savoury, saline notes beneath it, giving this Vermentino a character that feels both sunlit and coastal.

The palate is dry and juicy, with a gently rounded texture carried by lively acidity. Orchard fruit fills the middle of the mouth, while a fine mineral thread brings definition and keeps each sip inviting. Brief ageing on the fine lees adds subtle depth, leading into a lingering, fresh and lightly salty finish. Delicious in its youth, this is a white to open for its immediate brightness, with enough substance to carry effortlessly from an aperitif into dinner.

For when: Lunch runs late, and nobody is quite ready to leave the table.

Pairs with: Spaghetti alle vongole, grilled sea bream with lemon, garlic prawns, crab linguine, courgette and ricotta ravioli, or young Sardinian pecorino.

Cala Reale comes from selected Vermentino grown around Alghero in north-western Sardinia, where ancient marine soils and the nearby Mediterranean shape the vineyard landscape. Bottled under the Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, it combines the grape’s fragrant fruit with the savoury freshness that makes Sardinian whites so compelling at the table.

Sella & Mosca’s story began in 1899, when two Piedmontese adventurers, the engineer Sella and the lawyer Mosca, recognised the potential of land near Alghero. Their ambitious project involved clearing stones and reclaiming uncultivated ground to establish vineyards, laying the foundations for one of Sardinia’s defining wine estates.

The estate lies in the Nurra district of north-western Sardinia, where Mediterranean breezes temper the island’s warmth. Its vineyards encompass limestone, clay and sandy soils, surrounded by a landscape of Mediterranean vegetation. Sella & Mosca also works vineyards in Gallura and Sulcis, drawing on the contrasting conditions that make Sardinia such a varied place to grow wine.

Now part of the Terra Moretti family, Sella & Mosca combines its long history with continued research and attention to the estate’s biodiversity. Its range champions grapes closely associated with the island, including Vermentino and Torbato, alongside international varieties. Cala Reale offers an inviting introduction to that approach, bringing together aromatic clarity, coastal freshness and satisfying texture.

Made from 100% Vermentino selected from vineyards around Alghero, Cala Reale draws on ancient marine soils rich in limestone. The selection centres on fruit with the aromatic intensity and balance needed for this fresh yet generously textured style.

A cold pre-fermentation maceration helps extract flavour and aroma from the skins. Gentle pressing and cold settling prepare the juice for fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, preserving the grape’s orchard-fruit character and fragrant herbal notes.

A brief period of maturation in stainless steel includes time on the fine lees, adding texture while retaining freshness. The resulting style is focused on fruit, gentle richness and a savoury finish, with its greatest appeal in the brightness of youth.

Alcohol: 13.5%.
