2024 Village Pinot Gris, Kumeu River

Auckland, New Zealand

Orchard Light

White peach, ripe pear and apricot rise from the glass, joined by orange blossom and a delicate suggestion of honey. Floral and expressive without becoming heavy, this is Pinot Gris with both generosity and poise.

The palate is rounded and lightly off-dry, with fresh acidity lifting its succulent stone fruit and subtle lees-derived texture. It feels silky yet lively, finishing clean and gently aromatic. Delicious on its own but particularly impressive with food, this is a far more characterful alternative to neutral, mass-market Pinot Grigio.

For when: A long lunch drifts happily into the early evening.

Pairs with: Thai green curry, chilli prawns, glazed pork belly, aromatic chicken dishes or grilled halloumi.

Kumeu’s 2024 growing season brought warm, predominantly dry conditions and slow, even ripening. Yields were considerably lower than usual, but the Pinot Gris developed excellent concentration, high natural sugar and a touch of botrytis influence, giving the wine its appealing richness and texture.

Kumeu River is one of New Zealand’s most respected and internationally acclaimed family-owned wineries, located just northwest of Auckland. Established in 1944 by Croatian immigrants Mick and Katé Brajkovich, Kumeu River has become synonymous with exceptional Chardonnay, crafted with Burgundian finesse and New World purity.

Now run by the second and third generations of the Brajkovich family, Kumeu River is globally recognised for producing some of the finest Chardonnay outside of Burgundy, with consistent critical acclaim from international wine critics and publications. The estate’s maritime climate, clay-rich soils, and meticulous vineyard and cellar practices, including wild yeast fermentation and barrel ageing, contribute to the depth, complexity, and age-worthiness of their wines.

The Kumeu River range spans village-level to single-vineyard bottlings, with standout cuvées such as Mate’s Vineyard earning cult status. The winery also produces excellent Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, though Chardonnay remains its defining focus and claim to fame.

The sustainably grown Pinot Gris is hand-harvested and carefully sorted in Kumeu before gentle whole-bunch pressing. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, followed by extended maturation on the lees to build texture and complexity.

The finished wine has 10g/l residual sugar, balanced by 5.7g/l acidity, giving it a gently rounded profile with plenty of freshness. Alcohol is 12.9%.
