2024 The Wolftrap Red, Boekenhoutskloof

Western Cape, South Africa

Wolf Ember

This is a dark, spicy South African red with serious everyday charm. Black cherry, plum and blackberry lead the nose, layered with liquorice, coriander seed, smoky incense, cured meat and a little black olive. It has the warmth and generosity you want from a Rhône-style blend, but the fruit stays fresh, vivid and full of energy.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, smooth and richly flavoured, with dark berry fruit, chocolatey depth and supple, well-integrated tannins. Syrah brings plum, cherry and spice, Mourvèdre adds colour, grip and savoury meatiness, while a small touch of Viognier lifts the aromatics. A brilliant bottle for anyone who wants a reliable, characterful red with comfort, spice and proper Boekenhoutskloof pedigree.

For when
A weeknight red needs more depth than usual.

Pairs with
Burgers, grilled sausages, lamb koftas, smoky aubergine, beef chilli, barbecue ribs, mushroom pizza, lentil stew or mature cheddar.

The Wolftrap is Boekenhoutskloof’s more approachable, great-value range, inspired by the wild history of the Franschhoek farm and its old Cape legend. The red blend shows exactly why it has become such a dependable favourite: generous fruit, savoury spice, smooth texture and a level of polish that over-delivers for the price. It is relaxed enough for casual drinking, but serious enough to pour with proper food.

Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most respected modern wine names, based in Franschhoek and led by Marc Kent, whose focus on quality has helped shape the estate’s reputation across several standout labels. The name means “ravine of the Boekenhout”, a native Cape tree once prized for furniture making, and the farm’s history reaches deep into the Cape’s winemaking story.

While Boekenhoutskloof is famous for its serious fine wines, including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Porseleinberg and The Chocolate Block, The Wolftrap shows the more relaxed side of the estate. It brings the same understanding of blending and fruit selection into a bottle made for easy pleasure and strong value.

The range is inspired by an old wolf trap found on the property, a nod to the wilder days of the Franschhoek valley. Today, the wines capture that spirit in a generous, characterful style: expressive, food-friendly and unmistakably South African.

The 2024 Wolftrap Red is a blend of 80% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre and 1% Viognier, with Wine of Origin Western Cape. The blend is built around Rhône varieties that suit the Cape’s warm, dry conditions: Syrah for black fruit and spice, Mourvèdre for smoky depth and structure, and Viognier for a small aromatic lift.

The 2024 growing season was favourable, with adequate winter rainfall and dry conditions through harvest. The red varieties developed good colour, structure and integrated tannins, while freshness and balance remained central to the style. Analysis is listed at 13.76% alcohol, 2.7g/l residual sugar, 5.4g/l total acidity and pH 3.63.
