2024 'The Nest' Pinot Noir, Lake Chalice
Marlborough, New Zealand
Fresh black cherry, raspberry and ripe plum lead the way, with hedgerow fruit, baking spice and a gentle smoky note underneath. A touch of toasted oak and coffee brings warmth, but the overall personality remains bright, youthful and inviting.
Juicy and supple on the palate, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and a subtle cocoa-powder texture. Red fruit carries through to a lightly toasted finish, giving this easy-drinking Pinot enough structure and savoury detail to keep things interesting. It is versatile, polished and delivers more character than its relaxed style suggests.
For when: A weeknight supper deserves a proper red.
Pairs with: Roast chicken, duck, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, pork tenderloin or smoky aubergine.
The Nest is Lake Chalice’s approachable expression of Marlborough, made with carefully selected fruit from vineyards across the region. This Pinot Noir draws on low-cropping sites in the Southern Valleys, an area known for clay-influenced soils and generously flavoured Pinot. It captures the region’s bright fruit and natural freshness in a style designed for uncomplicated enjoyment.
This is the winery's tasting note, and it's so good we thought we would share it with you :
To experience the exotic aroma and tastes of this Pinot Noir from the Waipara Valleys, we’d like you to join us on a magic carpet ride to a Middle Eastern market bazaar. The bustling market stalls fill the air with the aroma of ripe berries and dried fruits. The spice stall owners spruik their wares, waving vanilla pods and pouring cardamom spices theatrically onto their scales in front of your nose. All these elements combine in glorious cinematic technicolour for the taste buds. Softly textured with ripe berry fruits and dried currants set against a backdrop of warmed spices. Rub this bottle of Waipara Pinot Noir three times before pouring it, and the first sip might transport you there again. No magic carpet required.
