2024 Sauvignon Blanc, Elena Walch, 1 Bottle Gift Box

Trentino, Alto Adige, Italy

Alpine Allure

Fragrant, poised and beautifully refreshing, Elena Walch’s Sauvignon Blanc brings an elegant Alpine accent to this much-loved grape. Ripe gooseberry and juicy papaya lead the aromas, with elderberry and delicate green herbs adding intrigue. The fruit has an appealing generosity, balanced by a clean, lively character that keeps each impression distinct. This is Sauvignon with personality and finesse, offering tropical ripeness alongside the freshness of northern Italy’s mountain vineyards.

The palate is dry and finely balanced, with succulent fruit carried by mouthwatering acidity and a gently rounded texture. Several months on the fine lees give it substance without sacrificing its brightness, leading to an elegant finish where fruit and herbal notes linger. Delicious now, with the structure to develop over the next few years, it makes a thoughtful choice for a Sauvignon lover looking to explore something different. Presented in a single-bottle gift box, it is equally suited to a birthday, a thank-you or a carefully chosen Christmas present.

For when: A thoughtful gift deserves a little Italian distinction.

Pairs with: Serve with grilled sea bass and lemon, asparagus risotto, goat’s cheese tart, trout with fresh herbs, roast chicken with tarragon or crab linguine.

Sauvignon Blanc has been grown in Alto Adige since the late nineteenth century, finding a distinctive home where Mediterranean warmth meets cool air from the Dolomites. Elena Walch’s version comes from south-east and south-west-facing vineyards on limestone-rich soils with a sandy component, combining ripe flavour with the freshness and definition that distinguish the region’s whites.

Based in Tramin in Alto Adige, Elena Walch is one of the region’s most influential family wine estates. An architect by training, Elena married into an established local wine family and brought a fresh perspective to its vineyards and cellar. Her determination to improve quality helped shape the modern reputation of Alto Adige, building an internationally respected name around wines of elegance, character and precision.

The estate’s vineyards draw on the region’s striking contrasts: sunny slopes, cooling mountain air and varied soils that give each site its own personality. Among its most celebrated holdings are Vigna Castel Ringberg overlooking Lake Caldaro and the steep, south-facing Vigna Kastelaz above Tramin. Careful attention to exposure, elevation and grape variety allows the family to make whites with aromatic clarity and reds with distinctive structure.

Today, Elena’s daughters Julia and Karoline lead the estate, representing the fifth generation of the family business. Sustainability is central to their approach, with practices including composting, encouraging biodiversity, targeted drip irrigation and lighter bottles. The estate achieved VIVA sustainability certification in 2024, reflecting a commitment that extends from vineyard management to the cellar and packaging.

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes are harvested by hand from south-east and south-west-facing vineyards in Alto Adige. Calcareous soils containing sand and the interplay of warm days and cooling mountain influences help develop ripe flavours while retaining freshness.

After picking, the grapes are gently pressed. The juice is clarified by settling at low temperatures before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled 19°C, preserving the variety’s distinctive fruit and herbal aromas.

The young wine remains in stainless steel for several months on its fine lees. This maturation adds a gentle roundness and texture while maintaining the wine’s bright, aromatic profile. It is ready to enjoy on release, with a suggested ageing potential of three to five years from the vintage.

Recommended drinking window: 2026–2029.
