2024 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Pitangerets, Domaine Jacques Carillon

Saint-Aubin, Burgundy, France

First Light

Fresh, youthful and beautifully pure, Les Pitangerets opens with white peach, clementine and lemon peel, layered with acacia blossom, a touch of honey and crushed stone. The fruit feels bright and finely defined, with restrained oak adding gentle texture without obscuring the vineyard’s cool, stony character.

Full and silky on the palate, yet driven by a vivid citrus backbone and mouth-watering freshness. Concentrated orchard fruit is balanced by energetic acidity, subtle creaminess and a fine saline edge. The finish is bright, mineral and impressively composed.

Pairs with: Dressed crab, scallops, grilled langoustines, sole with brown butter, roast chicken or fresh goat’s cheese.

Les Pitangerets occupies a cool, stony position on the border between Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Vergers. Jacques Carillon’s 0.44-hectare parcel previously produced Pinot Noir but was completely replanted with Chardonnay in 2020. 2024 is the first white vintage from these young vines, grown on brown clay and limestone between 300 and 350 metres above sea level.

The Carillon family has cultivated vines in Puligny-Montrachet for more than five centuries, with records naming Jehan Carillon as a village winegrower in 1520. Jacques joined his father Louis and brother François at the family estate after completing his winemaking studies in Beaune, helping to continue its reputation for classical, long-lived white Burgundy.

Domaine Jacques Carillon was created in 2010 when the historic family property was divided between Jacques and François. Jacques and his wife Sylvia now farm approximately five hectares, primarily situated within Puligny-Montrachet, alongside small holdings in neighbouring villages. All the wines are produced exclusively from estate-owned vineyards.

Viticulture is thoughtful and restrained, with controlled yields and harvesting carried out by hand. In the cellar, each wine follows a similar, traditional approach so that differences in character come from the vineyard rather than the winemaking. The resulting wines are linear, understated and intensely mineral, rewarding patience in the cellar.

The Chardonnay was hand-harvested from the domaine’s 0.44-hectare parcel in Les Pitangerets. The vineyard was replanted in 2020, making 2024 the first vintage of white wine from these young vines. Following gentle pressing and settling, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place in French oak barrels.

The wine remained on its fine lees in barrel for 12 months, with approximately 15% new oak, before spending a further six months in stainless steel. This restrained élevage develops its silky texture while preserving the purity of the citrus fruit and the vineyard’s bright, saline finish. The wine received a light filtration before bottling.
