2024 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes, Domaine Hubert Lamy

Burgundy, France

“The Limestone Current”

Pale lemon-gold with a silvery edge, this is taut, energetic and intensely mineral. Grapefruit peel, lemon, white flowers and a touch of ripe orchard fruit emerge alongside struck flint and crushed limestone. The palate is tightly coiled, with piercing citrus, vibrant acidity and a fine chalky grip. Concentrated without feeling heavy, it drives forward into a remarkably long, saline finish charged with freshness and energy.

For when: you want white Burgundy at its most precise and quietly thrilling.
Pairs with: Dover sole, roast turbot, scallops, guinea fowl or aged Comté.

From the visionary Olivier Lamy, Les Frionnes comes from beautifully exposed mid-slope vineyards directly behind the domaine. The vines include old parcels planted in the 1930s and 1960s, alongside a 1985 massal selection, rooted in poor, stony clay-limestone soils. Lamy’s high-density planting and early harvesting preserve intensity and natural acidity, while spontaneous fermentation and around a year on the lees in used 350-litre barrels build texture without obscuring the vineyard’s extraordinary mineral character.

About the 2024 Vintage in Burgundy:
2024 was a demanding, cool-growing vintage shaped by persistent rain, mildew pressure and greatly reduced yields. Sunny, breezy weather during August and September allowed the remaining Chardonnay to ripen slowly while retaining excellent natural acidity. The finest white wines are chiselled, citrus-driven and crystalline, with more tension than weight and a precision reminiscent of 2014. It may be a scarce vintage, but in the right hands it has produced wines of remarkable clarity, energy and sense of place.

he Lamy family has cultivated vines in Saint-Aubin since 1640, although Domaine Hubert Lamy was formally established by Hubert Lamy in 1973. Olivier joined his father in 1995 and now runs the estate alongside his wife, Karine, overseeing 18.5 hectares across Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay.

Olivier has become one of the most influential growers in contemporary Burgundy. His pioneering work with high-density planting encourages competition between vines and deeper root systems, while tall canopies, massal selections, careful soil cultivation and restrained yields help preserve concentration and freshness. Chardonnay now accounts for around 80% of the domaine’s production.

The cellar work follows the same philosophy of precision and restraint. Fermentations are slow and natural, new oak is used sparingly, and extended ageing on the lees brings texture without sacrificing tension. The resulting wines are defined by clarity, mineral intensity and remarkable longevity.

Les Frionnes occupies a well-exposed section of the Premier Cru slope immediately behind the domaine. Olivier Lamy works several old parcels within the vineyard, including vines planted during the 1930s and 1960s, together with a family massal selection planted in 1985. The soils are poor and stony, combining clay and limestone with a pronounced mineral character.

The Chardonnay was harvested by hand in small containers to protect the fruit. At the winery, the grapes were crushed and pressed slowly using a pneumatic press. The juice received only light settling before being transferred to used 350-litre barrels, where fermentation began naturally with indigenous yeasts.

The 2024 Les Frionnes was fermented and matured on its lees in seasoned oak, with little or no new wood, allowing the vineyard rather than the barrel to shape the wine. It spent approximately its first year in used 350-litre barrels before completing the domaine’s extended élevage, with bottling taking place after around 24 months.

Alcohol: 13%. Suggested drinking window: 2028 to 2039.
