2024 Ried Stein 'Engabrunn’ Grüner Veltliner, Bernhard Ott
Kamptal, Austria
Green apple and ripe apricot rise from the glass, joined by mango, orange zest, green grape and delicate white flowers. Subtle tobacco, mountain herbs and crushed stone bring a more savoury dimension, keeping the generous yellow fruit beautifully composed.
Concentrated yet graceful, the palate combines a silky, almost creamy texture with fine acidity and persistent mineral energy. Juicy orchard fruit fills the middle before a saline, gently peppered finish brings everything back into focus. Complex, poised and wonderfully complete, this is Grüner Veltliner with the depth to reward both immediate drinking and patient cellaring.
For when: You want a white wine with generosity, precision and something new to reveal in every glass.
Pairs with: Wiener schnitzel, roast pork, grilled turbot, asparagus, mushroom risotto, creamy poultry dishes or mature Alpine cheeses.
Ried Stein sits behind the village of Engabrunn, just across the regional boundary from Ott’s home in Wagram and within the Kamptal appellation. Vines have been cultivated here since 1426, originally by Göttweig Abbey, with Bernhard Ott taking responsibility for the site in 2010. Its approximately 50-year-old vines grow across a complex mixture of loess, ancient Danube gravel, marine deposits and Gföhl gneiss. The cooler conditions and varied geology give the wine its distinctive combination of ripe fruit, silky texture and mineral precision.
