2024 Ried Spiegel Feuersbrunn 10 TW Gruner Veltliner, Bernhard Ott

Kamptal, Austria

Fresh meadow herbs, lemon balm and chamomile rise from the glass, joined by lime zest, crisp apple, honeydew melon and a delicate hint of mango. A cool mineral note runs beneath the fruit, giving the wine an aromatic clarity and sense of restraint that immediately distinguishes Spiegel from Ott’s richer vineyard expressions.

Elegant and beautifully composed, the palate combines juicy yellow fruit with a silky texture and finely woven acidity. There is concentration through the middle, but the wine remains slender, energetic and wonderfully precise. The long, saline finish carries citrus, herbs and dark mineral notes, making this both the liveliest and most immediately expressive of Ott’s single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners.

For when: You want elegance, precision and freshness without sacrificing depth.

Pairs with: Wiener schnitzel, grilled trout, roast pork, asparagus, herb risotto, sushi or creamy vegetable dishes.

Ried Spiegel is Bernhard Ott’s highest vineyard, rising to around 350 metres above sea level. Its upper terraces sit close to the forest on tertiary gravel and loess, while the lower slopes contain loess deposits reaching up to 15 metres deep. Cool winds preserve freshness, while the southern exposure and deep-rooted vines provide ripeness and savoury intensity. The name Spiegel was historically used for a lookout point, reflecting the vineyard’s elevated position above the surrounding landscape.

Bernhard Ott is one of Austria’s defining producers of Grüner Veltliner. He took over his family’s estate in Feuersbrunn in 1993 and steadily refocused it around the variety, exploring how the individual soils and exposures of Wagram and neighbouring Kamptal influence its character.

Around 95% of the estate’s vineyards are planted with Grüner Veltliner. Bernhard converted to biodynamic farming in 2006 and became a founding member of respekt-BIODYN. Vineyard work is meticulous and largely carried out by hand, with cover crops, homemade compost, gentle pruning and careful soil cultivation helping the vines develop deep, resilient root systems.

The cellar philosophy is founded on patience and restraint. Natural fermentation, traditional basket pressing, extended lees ageing and large neutral oak casks allow the vineyard to remain at the centre of each wine. Ried Spiegel is the most refined and energetic of the estate’s single-vineyard expressions, prized for its cool aromatics, silky texture and mineral clarity.

The 2024 Ried Spiegel is made from 100% Grüner Veltliner selected from the oldest and finest vines within the eight-hectare Spiegel vineyard. Many of these vines were planted during the mid-1970s and now have roots extending several metres into the vineyard’s loess and gravel soils.

The grapes were harvested entirely by hand and slowly pressed in a traditional basket press. Spontaneous fermentation took place using naturally occurring yeasts, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to develop without excessive intervention.

The wine remained on its full lees for two winters in large Stockinger oak casks before bottling. These neutral vessels encourage gradual development and build texture without contributing an overt oak flavour, preserving Spiegel’s delicate aromatics, refined acidity and distinctive saline finish.

100% Grüner Veltliner. Alcohol: 13%. Residual sugar: 2.2g/L. Closure: natural cork. Approachable now and suitable for long-term cellaring.
