2024 Ried Rosenberg Feuersbrunn 10TW Gruner Veltliner, Bernhard Ott

Kamptal, Austria

Ripe pear, apricot and pineapple rise from the glass, layered with mandarin zest, white pepper, wild herbs and a delicate note of floral honey. Beneath the generous fruit lies a distinctive chalky minerality that gives the wine remarkable freshness and definition.

Broad, powerful and beautifully composed, the palate combines concentrated orchard fruit with a silky texture, finely judged acidity and a deep savoury undertow. There is real weight here, but never heaviness, with peppery spice and saline minerality carrying everything towards an exceptionally long, precise finish. A commanding Grüner Veltliner with the structure and complexity to develop magnificently in bottle.

For when: The bottle deserves the centre of the table and the evening has nowhere else to be.

Pairs with: Roast pork with crackling, veal schnitzel, turbot, roast chicken, creamy mushrooms or aged Alpine cheeses.

Rosenberg lies at the heart of the Hengstberg in Feuersbrunn and has been owned by the Ott family since 1889. Its oldest vines were planted in 1956 on deep, limestone-rich loess within a sheltered, south-facing basin that captures warmth while the woodland above provides protection. Named after the wild roses traditionally associated with fertile land, Rosenberg was Bernhard Ott’s first officially bottled single vineyard and remains his most powerful and enduring expression of Grüner Veltliner.

Bernhard Ott took over his family’s estate in Feuersbrunn in 1993 and has since established it as one of Austria’s leading specialists in Grüner Veltliner. Around 95% of the vineyards are devoted to the variety, allowing Ott to explore the full range of expressions produced by Wagram’s deep loess soils.

The estate converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2006 and is a founding member of respekt-BIODYN. Vineyard work is carried out largely by hand, supported by homemade compost, diverse cover crops and gentle pruning intended to encourage healthy soils and balanced vines.

In the cellar, Bernhard favours spontaneous fermentation, traditional basket pressing and extended maturation on the lees in large Stockinger oak casks. Rosenberg sits at the summit of the range, combining the richness of old vines and deep loess with remarkable mineral precision and longevity.

The 2024 Ried Rosenberg was made entirely from Grüner Veltliner grown on the estate’s oldest vines, planted in pure, deep loess with an exceptionally high limestone content. The vineyard sits between 270 and 330 metres above sea level and is planted from north to south, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while retaining freshness.

The fruit was harvested entirely by hand and gently pressed using a traditional basket press. Fermentation began naturally with indigenous yeasts, after which the wine remained on its full lees for two winters in large Stockinger oak casks. This patient élevage builds texture and complexity while allowing the character of the vineyard to remain at the forefront.

100% Grüner Veltliner. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: natural cork. Built for long-term cellaring.
