2024 'Rabbit Hole' Pinot Noir Simpsons Wine Estate

Kent, United Kingdom

Fresh cassis, black cherry and mulberry lead the aroma, joined by violet, cocoa and warm, sweet spice. Subtle notes of sandalwood and forest floor add depth, giving this Kentish Pinot Noir a confident, polished personality without masking its cool-climate freshness.

Ripe red and black fruit flows across the palate, framed by silky tannins and finely judged acidity. Gentle oak brings touches of vanilla and spice, while the finish remains smooth, savoury and persistent. This is an ambitious English Pinot Noir with genuine substance and finesse, offering a compelling taste of how far still wine in Kent has come.

For when: The Sunday roast deserves something home-grown and special.

Pairs with: Roast duck, mushroom Wellington, lamb chops, pork tenderloin or roasted root vegetables.

Simpsons Wine Estate sits on the chalk slopes of the North Downs in Kent, where long, cool ripening and a strong maritime influence suit Pinot Noir beautifully. Rabbit Hole is made from carefully selected estate fruit, capturing both the ripeness and freshness needed to produce serious English red wine.

Charles and Ruth Simpson have been making award-winning wines in the South of France since 2002. In 2012, attracted by the quality of the terroir and the opportunity to become part of one of the most dynamic wine-producing regions in the world, they brought their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons Wine Estate. Aspiring to produce the finest quality English wine, they planted 30 hectares of vineyards on the iconic chalk terroir of the North Downs and built a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery. In 2016, the Simpsons saw their first harvest. With a strong focus on provenance, they produce a highly-acclaimed range of exclusively estate-grown still and sparkling wines, including the Chalklands Classic Cuvée 2016, which won a gold medal in the 2019 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships.

On their French wine estate, the award-winning Domaine Sainte Rose in the Languedoc region, the Simpsons have always pursued the cleaner, truer flavours of the grape, and are now bringing this savoir-faire to their English vineyards. With rootstock meticulously matched to the soil and a new world-class winery just minutes from the vines, quality is the watchword.

The 2024 Rabbit Hole is made from 100% Pinot Noir selected for maturity and concentration from Simpsons’ chalk-soil estate vineyards in the North Downs. Low-yielding Burgundian clones provide the combination of ripe fruit, fragrance and structure required for a serious still red.

After inoculation, fermentation took place on the skins with gentle pumpovers twice daily for approximately two weeks. A portion of the wine also received traditional pigeage to build colour, flavour and tannin without excessive extraction.

Following primary fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in a combination of predominantly older oak and a smaller proportion of new French and American barrels. It matured in barrel for six months before being lightly filtered and bottled. The finished wine has 13% alcohol and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
