2024 Puligny-Montrachet, Olivier Leflaive

Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy, France

Quiet Precision

Delicate, luminous and beautifully restrained, this Puligny-Montrachet opens with white flowers, lemon peel and crisp orchard fruit, layered with fern, fresh herbs and a subtle stony character. The oak sits quietly beneath the fruit, adding just enough texture and warmth without disturbing its clarity.

Silky and finely proportioned, the palate combines white peach and citrus with bright acidity and a taut mineral backbone. There is impressive energy through the middle, followed by a gently saline finish that feels clean, composed and persistent. Classic Puligny, elegant rather than showy, with the freshness to develop gracefully in bottle.

For when: You want the elegance of Puligny without waiting for a grand occasion.

Pairs with: Cod with chive sauce, grilled turbot, seared scallops, roast chicken, asparagus risotto or young Comté.

This cuvée brings together Chardonnay from a broad selection of village-level vineyards across Puligny-Montrachet, combining estate-grown fruit with grapes from trusted growers. The stony clay-limestone soils at the foot of the hillside naturally unite elegance, richness and mineral freshness, creating a complete expression of the village rather than the character of a single site.

Maison Olivier Leflaive was founded in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984, drawing upon a family winemaking history that stretches back through generations. Olivier established the house with the aim of producing wines that faithfully express Burgundy’s individual villages and vineyards, working with both estate-owned parcels and carefully selected growers.

The house has developed an exceptional portfolio across the Côte de Beaune, with particular strength in Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault. Grapes are harvested according to the maturity of each individual site, with every parcel vinified separately before blending. This allows the character of each vineyard to be understood and preserved throughout fermentation and maturation.

Today, technical director Solène Panigai and oenologist Philippe Grillet oversee production. Their approach combines traditional Burgundian methods with precise, parcel-by-parcel decisions, producing white wines recognised for their freshness, textural clarity and carefully judged use of oak.

The Chardonnay was sourced from sustainably cultivated vineyards across Puligny-Montrachet, with vines averaging approximately 40 years old. The grapes were harvested entirely by hand, pressed as whole bunches and allowed to settle naturally for 24 hours before fermentation.

Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place in French oak barrels. The wine was matured for 18 months in total, spending the first 12 months in barrel, 20% of which was new oak, followed by six months in stainless steel. This combination builds texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s floral character, citrus freshness and precise mineral finish.
