2024 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots, Domaine Hubert Lamy

Burgundy, France

Quiet Voltage

Initially restrained, this gradually unfolds with white and yellow peach, orange blossom, lemon zest and crisp pear, layered with oyster shell, struck flint and a subtle smoky reduction. There is remarkable concentration beneath its cool, understated exterior, but nothing feels heavy or overworked.

The palate is compact, precise and intensely mineral. Ripe peach and citrus cut through a fine, creamy texture, driven forward by vivid acidity and a powerful saline current. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving traces of white stone, citrus oil and gunflint. Profoundly elegant and built for patience, this is Puligny seen through Olivier Lamy’s uncompromisingly pure lens.

For when: Patience is part of the pleasure.

Pairs with: Grilled lobster, turbot with beurre blanc, seared scallops, roast guinea fowl, mushroom risotto or aged Comté.

Les Tremblots lies on the southern side of Puligny-Montrachet, towards Chassagne, on a relatively gentle but exceptionally stony site. Pale limestone marl, clay and scattered red stones give the wine both breadth and a powerful mineral core. Olivier Lamy farms around one hectare here, combining established vines with a proportion of his closely planted, high-density vineyard. The greater competition between the vines encourages deeper roots and naturally concentrated fruit, bringing an unusual degree of tension and intensity to this village-level Puligny.

About the 2024 Vintage in Burgundy

The 2024 growing season was one of Burgundy’s most demanding in recent years. Rain, frost, hail and intense mildew pressure greatly reduced the crop, requiring relentless vineyard work and rigorous selection at harvest. Warmer, drier conditions during August and September finally allowed the remaining grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.

Quantities are extremely limited, but the best white wines are beautifully balanced and refined. Lower alcohol, bright acidity and pure citrus fruit give the vintage a cool, classical character. In Puligny-Montrachet, Chardonnay developed impressive concentration while retaining the crystalline freshness and mineral precision for which the village is celebrated.

Domaine Hubert Lamy is one of the defining estates of modern white Burgundy. The Lamy family has cultivated vines in Saint-Aubin since 1640, while the present domaine was established by Hubert Lamy in 1973. Today it is run by his son Olivier and Olivier’s wife, Karine, farming 18.5 hectares across Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay.

Olivier has earned an international reputation for bringing extraordinary precision and energy to Chardonnay. His approach begins in the vineyard, with massal selections, high planting densities, tall canopies, careful soil cultivation and meticulous manual work. His pioneering high-density parcels encourage competition between the vines, producing smaller yields of deeply concentrated fruit.

In the cellar, each parcel is vinified and matured separately to preserve its individual character. Natural fermentations, extended lees ageing and little or no new oak allow the wines to develop texture without losing their purity. The resulting whites are finely structured, mineral and remarkably long-lived, placing Domaine Hubert Lamy among the most sought-after producers in the Côte de Beaune.

The 2024 Les Tremblots is made from 100% Chardonnay grown on pale limestone marl and clay soils scattered with red and light-coloured stones. The cuvée combines fruit from established vines with a proportion from Olivier Lamy’s densely planted section of the vineyard.

The grapes were harvested by hand, crushed and slowly pressed in a pneumatic press. After light settling, the juice was transferred to 350-litre barrels and 600-litre demi-muids for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The majority of the vessels were seasoned, allowing the wine to gain texture without acquiring an overt oak flavour.

Each component was vinified and matured separately, with the domaine’s cool cellar encouraging a long, gradual fermentation. The wine underwent approximately 24 months of élevage before bottling, building depth and integration while retaining its taut mineral character.

Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay. Alcohol: 13%. Recommended drinking window: 2029 to 2044.
