2024 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Referts, Olivier Leflaive

Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy, France

Silk and Stone

Radiant and beautifully expressive, Referts opens with lemon zest, white peach and candied citrus, layered with warm brioche, toasted almond, dried fruit and a subtle note of green tea. Beneath its generosity lies a cooler mineral character, bringing definition and keeping the wine unmistakably Puligny.

Broad, juicy and luxuriously textured, the palate has greater weight than many wines from the village, yet never feels heavy. Ripe orchard fruit and delicate pastry notes are drawn forward by bright acidity and a fine saline line, finishing long with citrus peel, crushed stone and gently toasted spice. Rich enough to impress immediately, but composed enough to develop beautifully in bottle.

For when: You want Puligny’s precision with a little more generosity around the edges.

Pairs with: Turbot with beurre blanc, seared scallops, roast chicken, sweetbreads, mushroom vol-au-vent or mature Comté.

Referts lies at the northern edge of Puligny-Montrachet, immediately beside Meursault Premier Cru Charmes and separated from it by the historic Chemin des Moines. Marl-rich soils higher on the slope become increasingly ferruginous below, producing a broader, more unctuous expression of Puligny while preserving the appellation’s characteristic freshness and mineral poise.

Maison Olivier Leflaive was founded in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984, drawing upon a family winemaking history that stretches back through generations. Olivier established the house with the aim of producing wines that faithfully express Burgundy’s individual villages and vineyards, working with both estate-owned parcels and carefully selected growers.

The house has developed an exceptional portfolio across the Côte de Beaune, with particular strength in Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault. Grapes are harvested according to the maturity of each individual site, with every parcel vinified separately so that its character can be preserved throughout fermentation and maturation.

Today, technical director Solène Panigai and oenologist Philippe Grillet oversee production. Their approach combines traditional Burgundian methods with precise, parcel-by-parcel decision-making, producing white wines recognised for their freshness, textural clarity and restrained use of oak.

The Chardonnay comes from sustainably cultivated vines averaging approximately 46 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils between 230 and 250 metres above sea level. The grapes were harvested entirely by hand and pressed as whole bunches before undergoing 24 hours of static settling.

Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place in French oak barrels. The wine was matured for 18 months in total, spending the first 12 months in barrel, 22% of which was new oak, followed by six months in stainless steel. This extended élevage builds texture and complexity while allowing the vineyard’s citrus freshness and mineral character to remain clearly defined.
