2024 Pinot Grigio & Pinot Noir, Elena Walch, 2 Bottle Gift Box

Trentino, Alto Adige, Italy

Alpine Duet

Fresh orchard fruit meets fragrant red berries in this elegant pairing from Elena Walch. The 2024 Pinot Grigio opens with ripe pear, delicate white pepper and a touch of sage, revealing a gently savoury, mineral character beneath its inviting fruit. Alongside it, the 2024 Pinot Noir, known locally as Pinot Nero, offers bright cherry and raspberry aromas with subtle spice. Together, they capture the freshness and expressive fruit that make Alto Adige’s wines so distinctive.

The Pinot Grigio is dry and rounded, with a lightly silky texture, crisp acidity and an appetising saline finish. The Pinot Noir brings juicy red fruit, soft, velvety tannins and a graceful finish, delivering satisfying flavour with a wonderfully light touch. Both are ready to enjoy, while the red has the structure to develop further with careful cellaring. With one 75cl bottle of each presented in a two-bottle gift box, this is a thoughtful choice for anyone who enjoys discovering elegant Italian wines in both colours.

For when: One thoughtful gift, two delicious reasons to raise a glass.

Pairs with: Enjoy the Pinot Grigio with grilled sea bream, courgette and ricotta ravioli or cheese fondue, and the Pinot Noir with roast duck breast, mushroom risotto or pork tenderloin with thyme.

This gift box explores two members of the Pinot family through the vineyards of Alto Adige. The Pinot Grigio combines fruit from slopes between 250 and 900 metres, while the Pinot Noir draws on sites between approximately 400 and 950 metres. Warmer parcels contribute ripeness and generosity, while cooler mountain vineyards bring freshness and definition, giving each wine a distinctive balance of fruit and finesse.

Elena Walch is a family estate based in Tramin, in northern Italy’s Alto Adige region. An architect by training, Elena married into an established local wine family and brought a fresh perspective to its vineyards and cellar. Her focus on quality and the character of individual sites helped establish the estate among the region’s leading names.

Alto Adige combines Mediterranean warmth with cooling Alpine influences, creating conditions particularly suited to aromatic whites and elegant reds. The family works with varied elevations, exposures and soils, including the celebrated Vigna Castel Ringberg above Lake Caldaro and the steep Vigna Kastelaz overlooking Tramin. Matching grape varieties to these contrasting sites is central to the estate’s approach.

Today, daughters Julia and Karoline lead the business as the fifth generation of the family. Their commitment to careful vineyard work is supported by measures including composting, encouraging biodiversity, targeted irrigation and lighter bottles. The estate achieved VIVA sustainability certification in 2024, reflecting an approach that encompasses the vineyards, cellar and packaging.

The 2024 Pinot Grigio is made from 100% Pinot Grigio, harvested by hand from steep, south-east and south-west-facing vineyards. Limestone-rich soils contain clay, sand and porphyry components. After gentle crushing and pressing, the juice is clarified at low temperatures and fermented in stainless steel at 20°C. Several months on the fine lees add texture while preserving the wine’s fresh fruit and mineral character.

The 2024 Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir, hand-picked and carefully selected from vineyards on limestone and porphyry soils. Fruit from warmer sites around 400 metres is combined with grapes grown at elevations reaching 950 metres. Temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in stainless steel for approximately ten days.

The Pinot Noir subsequently undergoes malolactic fermentation and maturation in a combination of stainless steel and large, 2,200-litre oak casks. This approach supports its supple texture and bright red fruit. The estate suggests ageing potential of three to four years for the Pinot Grigio and five to seven years for the Pinot Noir.
