2024 Pinot Grigio, Elena Walch, 1 Bottle Gift Box

Trentino, Alto Adige, Italy

Dolomite Pearl

Elegant, fragrant and quietly expressive, Elena Walch’s Pinot Grigio brings together ripe orchard fruit and the refreshing precision of Alto Adige. Pear takes centre stage, accompanied by delicate floral notes, a twist of white pepper and a subtle hint of sage. There is a lovely purity to the aromas, with gentle citrus freshness and a mineral character giving definition to the generous fruit. It is an inviting introduction to the characterful whites of Italy’s mountainous north.

The palate is dry and smoothly textured, with a rounded middle balanced by crisp acidity and an appetising saline edge. Time on the fine lees adds depth and a delicate silkiness, allowing the pear and citrus flavours to linger through an elegant finish. Delicious now, with the balance to develop over the next couple of years, this is a satisfying choice for anyone who appreciates freshness with substance. Presented in a single-bottle gift box, it makes a thoughtful birthday present, dinner-party thank-you or Christmas gift.

For when: A beautifully chosen bottle says thank you better than words.

Pairs with: Serve with grilled sea bream and lemon, crab linguine, courgette and ricotta ravioli, roast chicken with sage, smoked trout pâté or a classic cheese fondue.

This Pinot Grigio draws its character from steep vineyards between 250 and 900 metres above sea level. Fruit from warmer slopes brings ripeness and breadth, while cooler mountain sites contribute freshness and aromatic definition. The combination gives the wine its distinctive balance of rounded fruit, mineral depth and lively acidity.

Elena Walch is a family estate based in Tramin, in the heart of Alto Adige. Originally an architect, Elena married into one of the region’s established wine families and brought a fresh perspective to its vineyards and winemaking. Her commitment to quality helped establish the estate as a leading name in northern Italy, recognised for wines that combine expressive fruit with elegance and a clear sense of place.

The family’s vineyards benefit from Alto Adige’s meeting of Mediterranean warmth and Alpine conditions. Varied elevations, cooling mountain air and contrasting soils create opportunities for a broad range of grape varieties. Its celebrated sites include Vigna Castel Ringberg above Lake Caldaro and the steep, south-facing Vigna Kastelaz overlooking Tramin, each cultivated to highlight its particular character.

Today, daughters Julia and Karoline lead the business as the fifth generation of the family. Meticulous vineyard work sits alongside a practical commitment to sustainability, including composting, encouraging biodiversity, targeted irrigation and lighter glass bottles. The estate received VIVA sustainability certification in 2024, recognising an approach that extends across vineyard management, cellar operations and packaging.

Made from 100% Pinot Grigio, the grapes are harvested entirely by hand from steep, south-east and south-west-facing vineyards at elevations of 250–900 metres. The soils are predominantly calcareous, with clay, sand and porphyry components. Combining fruit from cooler high-altitude sites and warmer mid-slope vineyards helps balance aromatic freshness with ripe flavour and body.

The grapes are carefully crushed and gently pressed. The juice is clarified by settling at low temperatures before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled 20°C, retaining the grape’s delicate fruit and herbal character.

Maturation continues for several months in stainless steel on the fine lees, adding texture and depth while preserving freshness. The wine is approachable on release, with a suggested ageing potential of three to four years from the vintage.

Alcohol: 13%. Residual sugar: 1.8g/L. Total acidity: 5.4g/L. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2028.
