2024 Ovilos, Biblia Chora

Macedonia, Greece

Ktima Biblia Chora’s 2024 Ovilos is one of Greece’s great modern white wines: rich, mineral, aromatic and quietly serious. A blend of Assyrtiko and Semillon from the slopes of Mount Pangeon, it opens with white peach, apricot, lemon peel, honey, tropical fruit, herbs, white pepper, vanilla and a delicate nutty edge.

On the palate, it has the texture and polish of fine white Bordeaux, but with the salt, freshness and mountain brightness of northern Greece. Semillon brings perfume, depth and gentle waxy richness, while Assyrtiko gives citrus drive, structure and a long mineral finish. Full of flavour but beautifully controlled, this is a white wine with presence, poise and real ageing potential.

For when
The white wine needs to be as impressive as the main course.

Pairs with
Grilled turbot, lobster, seafood risotto, sushi, roast chicken, turkey, pork, cheese soufflé, baked feta, creamy fish pie or dishes with lemon, herbs and olive oil.

Ktima Biblia Chora is one of the star estates of modern Greek wine, founded by Vassilis Tsaktsarlis and Vangelis Gerovassiliou on the slopes of Mount Pangeon, near Kavala. Ovilos is its flagship white, marrying Assyrtiko’s piercing freshness with Semillon’s texture and ageworthy richness. Grown in one of the warmest and most barren parts of the estate vineyard, it is a serious Greek white with international polish and a very clear sense of place.

Ktima Biblia Chora is one of the most important names in contemporary Greek wine. The estate was founded in 1998 by two highly respected winemakers, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis and Vangelis Gerovassiliou, on the lower slopes of Mount Pangeon in northern Greece. Its name refers to the ancient “Biblia Chora”, a region celebrated for vine growing and winemaking since antiquity.

The estate combines Greek heritage with modern precision. Tsaktsarlis trained in Bordeaux and studied under Denis Dubourdieu, while Gerovassiliou studied under Émile Peynaud and is widely admired for his role in reviving the Malagousia grape. Together, they have created a winery that helped push Greek wine firmly onto the international fine-wine stage.

Ovilos White is one of the estate’s defining bottles. It takes Greece’s Assyrtiko and blends it with Semillon in a style that feels both Mediterranean and Bordelais: structured, textural, fresh, complex and built to age. It is a bottle for anyone who wants to understand just how good modern Greek white wine can be.

Ovilos White 2024 is a dry white wine from PGI Pangeon, made from Assyrtiko and Semillon grown on the slopes of Mount Pangeon. The fruit comes from the warmest and most barren part of the estate vineyard, where poor soils and controlled vigour help concentrate flavour. The wider estate sits near Kavala, with mountain influence and Aegean sea breezes helping preserve freshness.

The wine is made from an equal blend of Assyrtiko and Semillon. The Semillon contributes aromatic richness, waxy texture, honeyed fruit and ageing potential, while the Assyrtiko provides acidity, structure, citrus tension and mineral drive. After a short period of skin contact, the wine is fermented in French oak and left on its lees in barrel for several months, building texture, depth and complexity without losing freshness.

The 2024 vintage is certified organic, vegan suitable and bottled at 13.5% alcohol. It is bright yellow with green hints, richly textured and aromatic, with apricot, honey, tropical fruit, citrus, nuts, vanilla and a long, refreshing finish. It can be enjoyed now, ideally around 12°C, or cellared for a decade or more.
