2024 Organic Verdejo, Mesta

Ucles, Spain

Mesta’s 2024 Organic Verdejo is the sort of white that makes the fridge door feel like a very good place to start. Crisp, bright and aromatic, it opens with lime zest, green apple, pear, fresh grass, fennel and a neat flicker of white pepper.

On the palate, it is dry, zippy and clean, with juicy citrus fruit, herbal freshness and a subtle mineral finish. This is a brilliant Spanish alternative to Sauvignon Blanc: still fresh, still aromatic, but a little more textured, savoury and quietly grown-up. No oak, no heaviness, just high-altitude Verdejo with proper lift and everyday charm.

For when
You want Sauvignon-like freshness, but with a Spanish accent and a sharper shirt.

Pairs with
Prawns, grilled fish, calamari, chicken salads, asparagus, goats’ cheese, seafood paella, courgette fritters, vegetable curries or spicy noodle dishes.

Mesta is produced from organically farmed vineyards in Uclés, in the northern part of Central Castile. The wines are made to show purity, freshness and varietal character rather than oak or weight, and this Verdejo does exactly that. High-altitude vineyards, sunny days, cool nights and thoughtful organic farming all help create a white that is lively, clean and brilliantly useful.

Mesta is a modern Spanish wine range produced at Bodegas Fontana in Uclés, Central Castile. Its name comes from the powerful medieval association of shepherds that once controlled the routes used for moving flocks across Spain. Those old tracks still pass through the landscape, giving the wines a strong connection to place, nature and rural Castilian heritage.

The vineyards are organically farmed and managed as integrated ecosystems, with biodiversity at the centre of the approach. Old oak trees, wild birds, dry summers and high-altitude conditions all form part of the picture. This is not a region built on softness and ease. It is a place of sun, altitude and contrast, where bright days build flavour and cool nights preserve definition.

Mesta’s aim is refreshingly straightforward: pure, honest wines from noble Spanish varieties, made for drinking rather than showing off. The Verdejo is one of the clearest examples in the range, offering freshness, aromatic lift and crisp, food-friendly charm at excellent value.

The 2024 Mesta Organic Verdejo is made from 100% Verdejo grown in certified organic estate vineyards in Uclés, Castile. The vines are around 20 to 30 years old and planted on loamy clay soils. The vineyards sit at high altitude in a continental climate, where sunny days help ripen the fruit while cool nights retain acidity, fragrance and varietal precision.

The grapes are picked early in the morning and quickly taken to the winery to preserve freshness. After destemming, they undergo a short cold maceration before gentle pneumatic pressing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel using selected yeasts, keeping the wine crisp, aromatic and unoaked. Malolactic fermentation is prevented by chilling, so the wine keeps its bright citrus edge.

After fermentation, the wine spends around four to six months in stainless steel before cold stabilisation and light filtration. The finished wine is 12.5% alcohol, with a dry, refreshing profile and a slightly mineral finish. It is certified organic, vegan suitable and sealed under screwcap for maximum freshness.
