2024 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Brookdale Estate

Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa

This is serious old-vine Cape Chenin with richness, texture and a beautifully mineral core. Green apple, poached pear and white peach lead the nose, followed by dried hay, stem ginger, exotic herbs, dried apricot and a touch of candied pineapple. It feels generous and layered, but never loose; there is a clear stony freshness running beneath the fruit.

On the palate, it is full, creamy and sophisticated, with ripe orchard fruit, soft spice and lees-built texture carried by a long, mineral finish. The oak is judged for shape rather than obvious flavour, giving the wine polish while allowing the old-vine Chenin character to shine. A brilliant South African white for anyone who loves textured Burgundy, serious Loire Chenin or full-flavoured whites with freshness and depth.

For when
Roast chicken needs a white with real Cape depth.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, pork belly, lobster, scallops, crab linguine, mushroom risotto, butternut squash, Cape Malay curry, Comté or soft washed-rind cheeses.

Brookdale’s Old Vine Chenin Blanc comes from vines planted in 1985 on decomposed shale and granite soils in Paarl. It captures the estate’s thoughtful approach: old vines, careful picking, wild fermentation and long ageing to build texture without losing freshness. This is not simple, fruity Chenin; it is layered, mineral and quietly luxurious.

Brookdale Estate is one of Paarl’s most intriguing modern wine projects, set in a dramatic corner of the Cape Winelands beneath the Hawequa mountains. Once an overgrown and largely forgotten vineyard, the estate was transformed by the Rudd family into a refined country retreat with a serious wine programme at its heart.

The property combines old-vine heritage with a restless, experimental spirit. Brookdale works with established Cape classics such as Chenin Blanc, while also exploring more unusual varieties and field blends that reflect the estate’s curiosity and ambition. Sustainability and biodiversity are central to the wider project, with indigenous gardens, fynbos, wildlife and thousands of newly planted native trees shaping the landscape around the vineyards.

These Mediterranean varietals, the distinctive Paarl terroir and creative winemaking techniques come together under the visionary hand of Tim Rudd and talented young winemaker Xander Sadie.
Born into a family where winemaking is rooted deeply within its DNA, Xander Sadie holds a diploma in Cellar Technology and Viticulture from Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute. After his studies he completed his practical training at Hamilton Russell, with harvests at Intellego Wines, Swartland. He gained international experience in Vouvray, the Douro and in the Sonoma Valley.

Minimal winemaking techniques allowed this stony terroir to shine through. The grapes were hand-picked at different stages to achieve optimal ripeness and balance. The fruit was pre-cooled and gently whole bunch pressed before spontaneous fermentation and partial malolactic conversion took place for added elegance, and complexity. The wine was matured for 11 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, with eight months lees ageing in 2,000-litre Stockinger Foudres. The wine spent an additional six months in bottle prior to release.
