2024 Napa Valley Chardonnay, Freemark Abbey

Napa Valley, United States

This is polished Napa Chardonnay with richness, freshness and classic Freemark Abbey restraint. Fresh pear, baked apple and pineapple lead the nose, lifted by citrus zest, honeyed flowers, warm spice and a gentle touch of vanilla oak. It has the generosity you expect from California Chardonnay, but the fruit stays bright, and the style feels balanced rather than heavy.

On the palate, it is creamy, layered and expressive, with orchard fruit, stone fruit and subtle baking spice carried by lively acidity. The oak adds texture and polish without overwhelming the fruit, giving a long, graceful finish with both freshness and depth. A brilliant choice for anyone who loves premium Chardonnay with a little Napa luxury, but still wants lift, balance and food appeal.

For when
Roast chicken needs a proper Napa upgrade.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, lobster, scallops, crab cakes, creamy mushroom pasta, pork tenderloin, butternut squash risotto, grilled corn, soft cheeses or Comté.

Freemark Abbey’s Napa Valley Chardonnay draws on carefully selected fruit from Carneros, Coombsville and eastern Napa Valley, giving a blend of cool-climate freshness, orchard fruit and polished texture. It sits perfectly within the estate’s house style: classic, structured and refined, with California generosity held in balance.

Freemark Abbey is woven into the history of Napa Valley. Founded in 1886, the winery was the only estate to have both a red and a white wine selected for the landmark 1976 Judgment of Paris. Today, winemaker Kristy Melton continues that legacy with a measured, vineyard-led style that values depth, freshness and balance over excess.

Freemark Abbey is one of Napa Valley’s historic names, with roots going back to 1886 and Josephine Tychson, one of California’s first female vintners. Based in St. Helena, the estate has helped shape the story of Napa wine across three centuries, from its early redwood cellar to its modern reputation for classically structured Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery is especially famous for its role in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where it was the only American estate to have both a red and a white wine chosen for the tasting. That place in Napa history gives Freemark Abbey genuine fine-wine credibility, but the wines themselves remain polished, reliable and highly drinkable.

Today, under winemaker Kristy Melton, the estate continues to focus on balance, structure and vineyard character rather than exaggerated ripeness.

The 2024 Napa Valley Chardonnay is sourced from selected vineyards in Carneros, Coombsville and eastern Napa Valley. These sites bring together ripe fruit, cooling influence and natural brightness, helping produce a Chardonnay with both richness and freshness.

The wine was aged for eight months in French oak, with 43% new barrels. That oak component gives the wine its creamy texture, spice and polished finish, while the fruit sourcing keeps the profile lifted and expressive.

The result is a classy, fresh and generous Napa Chardonnay, with pear, baked apple, pineapple, citrus zest, honeyed florals and warm spice. It is drinking beautifully now, especially with richer seafood, poultry and creamy dishes, but it also has the balance to develop over the next few years. Alcohol is 14.3%, and the wine is closed under cork.
