2024 Muscadet de Sevre et Maine, Chéreau Carre

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Loire Valley, France

Chéreau Carré’s 2024 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is exactly what good Muscadet should be: crisp, dry, mineral and built for seafood. Made from Melon de Bourgogne in the western Loire, it opens with lemon, green apple, white flowers and a clean sea-breeze freshness, with a subtle stony edge beneath the fruit.

On the palate, it is bright, pure and wonderfully refreshing, with citrus, white fruit and a mouth-watering mineral line. There is no oak, no heaviness and no fuss, just clean Loire clarity and a lemony finish that makes the next glass feel inevitable. A brilliant alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Picpoul when you want something sharp, saline and quietly classy.

For when
The oysters are cold, the glass is colder, and lunch is already winning.

Pairs with
Oysters, mussels, crab, prawns, grilled sea bass, sushi, goats’ cheese, lemon chicken, fried whitebait or a bowl of salty crisps before dinner.

Chéreau Carré is one of the leading names of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, a family house rooted south-east of Nantes and now guided across several generations. The estate works some of the region’s prized schist and volcanic-influenced terroirs, giving this wine its clean, mineral personality. Fresh, dry and effortlessly food-friendly, it is a classic expression of Muscadet’s great seaside charm.

Chéreau Carré is one of the most established family names in Muscadet, based in the Pays Nantais, south-east of Nantes. The house was created in 1960, when Bernard Chéreau married Edmonde Carré, beginning a family story now carried forward across three generations. Today, Bernard Chéreau and Louise Chéreau continue that work, with a focus on the varied terroirs of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine.

The estate is important not just for its scale, but for its role in lifting the reputation of the appellation. Chéreau Carré works substantial family-owned vineyards, including some of the best sites in the region, and has long championed Muscadet as a wine of freshness, minerality and real character rather than simple refreshment. Its vineyard holdings allow the family to make a wide range of styles, from bright, immediate cuvées to more textured, lees-aged and single-site bottlings. For customers, this is Muscadet with proper pedigree: crisp, Atlantic-influenced, sustainably farmed and made by a family deeply tied to the region.

This 2024 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne, the classic grape of the Pays Nantais. The vineyards sit in the western Loire, close to the Atlantic, where the cool maritime climate helps preserve freshness and gives Muscadet its famously crisp, dry profile. The soils include old volcanic formations, contributing to the wine’s bright mineral character.

The wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel to protect purity, citrus fruit and clean aromatics. It is made in an unoaked style, keeping the focus firmly on freshness, white fruit and lemony precision. This cuvée is not fermented on its lees and is racked only once before bottling, a gentle approach that helps retain maximum brightness and clarity.

The 2024 style is classic and refreshing: pale, dry, citrus-led and mineral, with crisp acidity and a clean finish. It is designed for early drinking and is at its best served well chilled with seafood, shellfish, salads or simple salty snacks.
