2024 Meursault Les Clousots, Domaine Patrick Javillier

Meursault, Burgundy, France

Pear and Stone

White peach, ripe pear and crisp green apple rise from the glass, layered with lemon zest, white flowers, toasted almond and a subtle hint of peppery spice. There is a gentle creaminess beneath the fruit, balanced by the cool, stony character that gives fine Meursault its unmistakable sense of place.

Broad and beautifully textured, yet never heavy, the palate combines generous orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a fine mineral backbone. Les Clous brings richness and depth, while Les Crotots adds precision, citrus freshness and drive. The finish is long, savoury and quietly persistent, with lingering notes of pear skin, hazelnut and crushed limestone.

For when: The evening calls for white Burgundy with generosity, elegance and just enough seriousness.

Pairs with: Roast chicken, grilled turbot, scallops, lobster, veal in a cream sauce, mushroom risotto or mature Comté.

Les Clousots takes its name from the marriage of two complementary Meursault vineyards. The 2024 combines 60% Les Clous, a mid-slope parcel with deeper clay soils that brings body and richness, with 40% Les Crotots, a limestone-rich site immediately below Premier Cru Les Porusots that contributes freshness, definition and mineral energy.

Domaine Patrick Javillier is a family-run estate based in Meursault, with approximately 11 hectares of vineyards spread across five communes of the Côte de Beaune. The domaine’s modern story began in 1945, when Raymond Javillier returned from the war and took responsibility for two hectares of family vines. His son Patrick joined after completing his national diploma in oenology and oversaw his first harvest in 1974.

Patrick gradually expanded the estate through the 1980s and early 1990s, building an impressive collection of parcels in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses. Chardonnay remains at the heart of the domaine, with the wines admired for combining classic Meursault richness with freshness, precision and clear vineyard character.

The next generation now plays a central role. Patrick’s daughter Marion oversees the red wines and commercial side of the domaine, while Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy manages the vineyards and white-wine production. Thoughtful vineyard work, individual treatment of each parcel and long, carefully controlled maturation produce wines with texture, mineral definition and excellent ageing potential.

The 2024 Les Clousots is made entirely from Chardonnay and combines 60% fruit from Les Clous with 40% from Les Crotots. The grapes were sorted during harvesting before gentle pneumatic pressing, with the two vineyard components vinified separately to preserve their individual characters.

Following settling, the juice was transferred to oak barrels for fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation. No new oak was used for the 2024 vintage, allowing the purity of the fruit and the contrasting personalities of the two vineyards to remain at the forefront.

The components were blended during the summer following harvest, with total élevage lasting approximately 16 to 18 months. Bâtonnage was used selectively according to the needs of the vintage, and the wine was bottled at the domaine with minimal fining and filtration.

100% Chardonnay. Alcohol: 13%. Blend: 60% Les Clous and 40% Les Crotots. Recommended drinking: 2028 to 2034. Serve at 11 to 13°C.
