2024 Lioness of Mclaren Vale Shiraz, Dandelion Vineyards

McLaren Vale, Australia

Velvet Roar

Black plum and wild raspberry lead the aroma, joined by violet, cracked pepper, rosemary and dark chocolate. There is plenty of McLaren Vale richness, but the floral and herbal notes bring lift and definition to the wine’s generous dark fruit.

Full-bodied and supple, with ripe blackberry and plum supported by refreshing acidity and firm, dry tannins. Subtle oak brings touches of spice, cocoa and warmth without blunting the fruit. Rich enough to satisfy lovers of classic Australian Shiraz, yet polished and composed enough to avoid feeling heavy.

For when: The barbecue is glowing, and only a proper Shiraz will do.

Pairs with: Chargrilled steak, lamb cutlets, slow-cooked beef, smoky aubergine, venison sausages or mature Cheddar.

Lioness comes from a single vineyard in the foothills of McLaren Vale. Its old Shiraz vines grow in clay loam scattered with ironstone pebbles over the ancient Kurrajong Formation, producing concentrated fruit with depth, spice and a distinctive savoury edge.

Dandelion Vineyards is the venture of talented winemaker Elena Brooks, and her husband Zar. Their project makes wines from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Fleurieu, the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Elena hails from Bulgaria. Her mother worked for a local producer, and so much of Elena’s childhood was spent in a winery. By 15, she was well-versed in the ins and outs of the winemaking process, and by 16, she had made her first wine. After formal study and stints making wine worldwide, Elena eventually settled in McLaren Vale with Zar and founded Dandelion Vineyards. Nick Stock, one of Australia’s leading journalists, wrote about Dandelion Vineyards saying, “The approach is remarkably simple and sees Elena making wine from a suite of beautiful old vineyards across that blessed curve that runs from the Barossa, up through the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills and down into McLaren Vale.”

The 2024 Lioness is made from Shiraz grown in a single vineyard in the foothills of McLaren Vale. The old vines are rooted in ironstone pebble-laden clay loam over the ancient Kurrajong Formation, a silica-cemented conglomerate that contributes to the wine’s concentrated, savoury character.

The finished wine combines ripe plum and wild raspberry with violet, pepper, rosemary and chocolate. Carefully judged oak adds warmth and spice while allowing the vineyard fruit to remain central. Dry tannins and fresh acidity provide structure, balancing the natural richness of McLaren Vale Shiraz and carrying the dark fruit through a long, savoury finish.
