2024 Kin Grenache, Alkina

Barossa Valley, Australia

This is Grenache in its most fragrant, energetic form. Rose petal, wild strawberry, cranberry and red cherry rise first, followed by blood orange, red apple skin, white pepper and a flicker of savoury spice. It is bright and lifted, with that modern Alkina feel: pure fruit, fine detail and nothing heavy getting in the way.

On the palate, it is light on its feet but far from simple. Crunchy red fruit, orange zest and gentle spice are shaped by fine, persistent tannins and a fresh, mouth-watering line of acidity. This is Barossa Grenache with drinkability, perfume and precision, perfect for Pinot lovers who want more sun and Rhône drinkers who want more freshness.

Alkina is one of the most closely watched estates in the modern Barossa, based near Greenock on a certified organic and biodynamic farm. The property combines old-vine heritage with a very contemporary understanding of place, using detailed soil mapping and sensitive farming to reveal the character of each vineyard block.

The estate’s vineyards are planted to Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Semillon, with the oldest vines dating back to the 1950s. Under the ownership of Alejandro Bulgheroni, with viticulturist Amelia Nolan and renowned terroir specialist Dr Pedro Parra helping shape the estate’s direction, Alkina has become known for wines that are ripe, expressive and unmistakably Barossan, yet also precise, savoury and mineral.

What sets Alkina apart is its refusal to treat the Barossa as one broad style. Instead, the wines are built from careful observation of soil, aspect, vine age and parcel character. The Kin range offers an accessible introduction to that philosophy, delivering immediate pleasure while still showing the clarity, freshness and detail that define the estate.ne.

The 2024 Kin Grenache is 100% Grenache from three estate blocks at Alkina in the Barossa Valley. The fruit comes from blocks with differing aspects and geology, including schist-based soils and limestone-influenced sections. The vineyard is Southern Cross Certified organic and biodynamic.

The 2024 growing season followed a long, cold winter and a dry start, with little disease pressure and generally smaller bunches and berries. Picking began early across the estate, and the fruit for this wine was harvested on 24 February.

Each block was hand-picked, sorted and naturally fermented in concrete tulips with 80% whole bunches. After fermenting to dryness and spending an average of 35 days on skins, the wine was gently basket pressed back to concrete for malolactic fermentation. Components were matured separately in concrete only before blending. Alcohol is 13%, production is 1,600 dozen, and the wine is made for drinking now while its perfume and freshness are at their brightest.
