2024 Kalecik Karası, Kuzubağ
Aegean Islands, Turkey
The Anatolian Silk Road
This is Turkish red wine with perfume, softness and a lovely sense of movement. Made from 100% Kalecik Karası, it opens with cherry, wild strawberry, red plum and forest fruit, before clove, soft spice, violet and a gentle earthy note begin to appear. It is medium-bodied, fresh and fragrant, with a graceful, Pinot-like ease rather than heavy red-wine weight.
The palate is silky, bright and beautifully approachable, with red fruit, plum skin, spice and fine tannins carried by lively acidity. There is enough texture to feel serious, but the charm is in its lift and drinkability. Serve lightly chilled and let it do what Kalecik Karası does best: bring colour, spice and elegance to the table.
For when you want something fresh, Turkish and quietly seductive.
Pairs with lamb köfte, roast chicken, aubergine imam bayildi, grilled peppers, mushroom pilaf, tomato-rich pasta, or a generous mezze spread.
If this wine were… a fabric, it would be deep ruby silk, folded in a market stall at dusk with clove, smoke and warm stone in the air.
Kuzubağ was founded in Çal, Denizli, with the aim of showing the distinctive terroir of the region through local grapes and carefully managed vineyards. The estate works with high-altitude sites in Turkey’s inner Aegean, where cooling nights help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Their focus on varieties such as Kalecik Karası, Öküzgözü and Çal Karası makes Kuzubağ one of the most exciting names for anyone looking beyond the usual European classics.
