2024 Gimblett Gravels Syrah, Craggy Range

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Gravel Bloom

This is Hawke’s Bay Syrah with perfume, polish and a clear stony heartbeat. Blackberry, dark cherry and boysenberry lead the nose, lifted by violet, lavender, cracked black pepper, aniseed, black olive and a subtle savoury spice. It has the depth you expect from the Gimblett Gravels, but the character is more refined than heavy, with floral lift and mineral tension running through the fruit.

On the palate, it is concentrated, smooth and beautifully poised, with plush dark fruit, fine tannins and a long, peppery finish. The gravelly soils give structure and drive, while careful oak ageing adds shape without covering the purity of the Syrah. A superb New Zealand red for anyone who loves northern Rhône elegance but wants the ripe fruit, polish and freshness of Hawke’s Bay.

For when
A steak dinner needs Syrah with class.

Pairs with
Chargrilled ribeye, lamb cutlets, venison, beef short rib, black olive tapenade, mushroom pie, smoky aubergine, lentil stew or aged hard cheeses.

Craggy Range’s Gimblett Gravels Syrah is one of the estate’s signature Hawke’s Bay reds, grown on the stony old riverbed soils that have made this district famous. These soils produce rich, ripe, elegantly structured reds with a distinctive mineral, hot-stone and fine dusty character, affectionately known as “Gimblett Dust”. The site brings warmth, drainage and structure, while Craggy Range’s precise vineyard work keeps the style aromatic, fresh and composed. It is a brilliant expression of why Gimblett Gravels Syrah has become one of New Zealand’s most exciting fine-wine styles.

Craggy Range is one of New Zealand’s benchmark family-owned wineries, founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody with a clear vision: to create estate-grown, single-vineyard wines from the country’s most distinctive sites. Based beneath Te Mata Peak in Hawke’s Bay, the estate has become known for precision, ambition and wines that speak clearly of place.

The philosophy is built around matching the right variety to the right vineyard. In Hawke’s Bay, Craggy Range works with the warm, stony Gimblett Gravels for Syrah and Bordeaux varieties, while its Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough has become central to its Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir reputation.

The Gimblett Gravels wines show why Craggy Range is so trusted. They offer ripeness and concentration, but also structure, freshness and polish. This Syrah sits perfectly in that space: expressive, elegant, age-worthy and unmistakably New Zealand, with enough generosity to enjoy now and enough detail to reward serious wine drinkers.

The 2024 Gimblett Gravels Syrah is 100% Syrah from Craggy Range’s Gimblett Gravels Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay. The district is defined by free-draining, heat-retaining stony soils formed by the old Ngaruroro River, giving the wine its depth, structure and mineral edge. That famous “Gimblett Dust” character comes through as a fine, hot-stone minerality beneath the dark fruit and pepper.

The 2024 season began with a cool, late winter that delayed budbreak, followed by a mild spring that moderated yields. A warm, dry summer allowed for extended hangtime and excellent flavour development. Eleven parcels were hand-picked and hand-sorted, with the majority destemmed before fermentation in a mix of oak cuves, stainless steel tanks and concrete vats. The skins were gently plunged over an average of 20 days, with malolactic fermentation occurring at the same time. The wine was matured for 16 months in French and Austrian oak, 22% new, before bottling in November 2025.

The result is powerful but beautifully controlled, with blackberry, violet, cracked pepper, aniseed and black olive carried by fine tannins, mineral drive and that subtle dusty gravel signature. It is already impressive with a decant and generous food, but the structure gives it strong cellaring potential. Alcohol is 13%, residual sugar is nil, acidity is 5.6g/l and pH is 3.63.
