2024 Gavi dei Gavi Black Label, La Scolca

Gavi, Piemonte, Italy

Flint Bloom

White flowers, green apple and ripe pear rise from the glass, joined by lemon zest, acacia, fresh herbs and cool, stony minerality. There is real clarity and composure here, with enough aromatic depth to make this feel far more serious than a simple, youthful Gavi.

The palate is dry, precise and beautifully fresh, combining bright lime and orchard fruit with a gently rounded lees-aged texture. Flint, almond and a delicate savoury bitterness shape the long, clean finish. Elegant enough for an aperitif but structured enough for the table, this is benchmark Gavi from one of the region’s defining estates.

For when: A seafood lunch turns into the whole afternoon.

Pairs with: Oysters, dressed crab, seafood linguine, shellfish risotto, grilled sea bass, roast chicken or fresh goat’s cheese.

La Scolca has specialised in Gavi since 1919, building its reputation around Cortese grown on the high slopes of Rovereto Superiore. Black Label is the estate’s signature wine, produced from carefully selected old vines and made to combine immediate freshness with genuine ageing potential.

Founded in 1919, La Scolca is one of Gavi’s most historic and influential estates. The Soldati family has spent more than a century demonstrating that Cortese can produce wines of refinement, character and impressive longevity when grown in the right vineyards and handled with patience.

The estate is based around Rovereto Superiore di Gavi, where its elevated vineyards provide the freshness and mineral definition central to La Scolca’s style. Its finest Cortese comes from carefully tended old vines, with rigorous selection in the vineyard helping to create wines that offer greater concentration without losing their natural elegance.

Gavi dei Gavi Black Label is La Scolca’s signature bottle and a benchmark for the appellation. First introduced when much of Gavi was regarded as a simple, youthful white, it helped establish the region’s potential for more serious and ageworthy wines. Stainless-steel vinification, partial skin contact and extended time on the lees build texture and complexity while preserving Cortese’s floral, citrus and mineral character.

Still family-owned and now approaching its fifth generation, La Scolca combines deep local experience with a forward-looking approach. Its wines offer reliability, authenticity and a clear sense of place, making Black Label a trusted introduction to the finest side of Gavi.

Made from 100% Cortese grown on the high hills of Rovereto Superiore di Gavi. The fruit is selected cluster by cluster from vineyards more than 60 years old, giving the wine greater concentration, depth and capacity to develop in bottle.

Vinification takes place at cool temperatures in stainless steel, with a portion of the fruit receiving skin contact. The wine remains in contact with its native lees from the primary fermentation until bottling, adding texture and aromatic complexity without the use of oak.

The finished wine has an alcohol level of 12%. It is expressive in its youth but can retain its freshness and character for more than five years. Serve at around 12°C in a generous white-wine glass.
