2024 Estate Shiraz, Alkina

Barossa Valley, Australia

This is Barossa Shiraz with the power beautifully focused. Blackberry, black cherry and mulberry sit at the core, edged with cracked pepper, dried thyme, black olive, cured meat and a cool graphite note. It has the generosity you want from the Barossa, but the feel is lifted, savoury and precise rather than heavy.

On the palate, it is plush but controlled, with round tannins, juicy dark fruit, whole-bunch spice and a stony mineral line that keeps everything fresh. The 13% alcohol gives it poise, while the old-vine depth brings real seriousness. A modern Barossa Shiraz for drinkers who want flavour, structure and finesse in the same glass.

For when
A steak night needs a modern Barossa edge.

Pairs with
Chargrilled ribeye, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, peppered venison, mushroom and lentil pie, smoked aubergine or hard aged cheeses.

Alkina is one of the most exciting names in the Barossa right now, working from a certified organic and biodynamic estate near Greenock. Its focus is not just richness, but place: old vines, ancient soils, careful farming and small-parcel winemaking that reveals the detail beneath the fruit. This Estate Shiraz captures that philosophy perfectly, bringing together Barossa depth with clarity, energy and a distinctly savoury edge.

Alkina is a young estate with old roots, based near Greenock in the western Barossa. The property was established in its current form in 2015, but its vineyard history runs much deeper, with old vines dating back to the 1950s and heritage stone buildings from the 1850s. The estate is led by a clear belief that great Barossa wine should be expressive, detailed and deeply connected to its soils.

The vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic, with Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Semillon planted across a complex patchwork of ancient geology. Alkina has become especially known for its detailed soil mapping and “Polygon” project, which separates tiny parcels according to their distinct geological character. This precision gives the wines their signature feel: ripe and generous, but also mineral, savoury and beautifully controlled.

For customers, Alkina offers Barossa with a fine-wine mindset. These are not oversized wines chasing impact alone. They are carefully farmed, thoughtfully made and full of character, showing why the modern Barossa can be one of the most exciting places in Australian wine.

The 2024 Estate Shiraz is 100% Shiraz from Alkina’s certified organic and biodynamic estate in the Barossa Valley. The blend is centred on superior Shiraz blocks and polygons, including old vines rooted in clay and younger vines from limestone-influenced ground, with additional components from selected estate parcels and a concrete amphora blend.

The 2024 season followed a long, cold winter and a dry start to the growing season. Disease pressure was low, canopies were open and bunches and berries were generally smaller. Picking began early, on 5 February, and the warm, compressed vintage brought sugar, flavour and tannin development together in excellent balance.

Each block was hand-picked, sorted and naturally fermented with 50% to 80% whole bunch. Parcels were basket pressed and matured separately for 12 months before blending. The larger components were raised in concrete tulips, while smaller parcels spent time in large older oak foudres, with one component matured in a concrete amphora. Alcohol is 13%, production is 215 dozen, and the wine is suitable for drinking now or cellaring for up to 10 years.
