2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge La Goujonne, Domaine Hubert Lamy

Burgundy, France

Crimson Limestone

Bright, fragrant and wonderfully precise, La Goujonne opens with wild strawberry, crushed raspberry and red cherry, layered with peony, bay leaf and a subtle smoky earthiness. The palate is juicy and finely drawn, with vivid red fruit carried by fresh acidity and beautifully shaped tannins.

There is real depth beneath its elegance, with the old vines bringing concentration without heaviness. A gentle savoury quality emerges towards the finish, where delicate spice and fine limestone grip give the wine remarkable energy and length. Graceful rather than showy, this is red Burgundy with both charm and quiet authority.

For when: You want red Burgundy with grace, but not fragility.

Pairs with: Duck breast, roast guinea fowl, pork tenderloin, mushroom pithivier or Comté.

La Goujonne is a village-level vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet, planted on the red clay and limestone soils that have historically made the southern part of the appellation such fine territory for Pinot Noir. The fruit comes from some of Domaine Hubert Lamy’s oldest vines, now more than 70 years old. Their naturally low yields bring depth and intensity, while the limestone preserves the wine’s freshness, precision and finely etched structure.

About the 2024 Vintage in Burgundy

The 2024 growing season demanded extraordinary care in the vineyard, with rain, frost and mildew pressure significantly reducing yields. A brighter end to the season allowed the surviving Pinot Noir to ripen with freshness and aromatic clarity. The resulting reds favour red fruit, moderate alcohol and fine, delicate tannins over sheer weight. In the hands of Olivier Lamy, that cooler profile has produced a La Goujonne of exceptional energy, fragrance and definition.

Domaine Hubert Lamy is one of the defining estates of modern Saint-Aubin. The Lamy family has cultivated vines in the village since 1640, although the domaine in its present form was established by Hubert Lamy in 1973. Today, it is run by his son Olivier and Olivier’s wife, Karine, across 18.5 hectares in Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay.

Olivier has earned an international reputation for meticulous vineyard work and wines of remarkable precision. Higher planting densities, tall trellising, massal selection, careful soil cultivation and gentle pruning are all used to encourage competition between the vines and develop deeper root systems.

Although the domaine is best known for Chardonnay, its Pinot Noir vineyards receive the same detailed attention. The reds combine whole-bunch fermentation, restrained extraction and extended ageing to capture perfume, energy and transparency rather than excessive weight or oak.

The 2024 La Goujonne is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown on red clay and limestone soils in Chassagne-Montrachet. The vines are more than 70 years old and rank among the oldest at Domaine Hubert Lamy.

The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully sorted before spontaneous fermentation. Domaine Hubert Lamy typically retains between 50% and 100% whole bunches for its red wines, depending on the vineyard and vintage. Maceration lasted approximately three weeks, with carefully judged punch-downs and pump-overs used to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins without overpowering the wine.

The wine was matured for approximately 24 months in a combination of Burgundian barrels and larger oak vessels, with around 10% new oak. Malolactic fermentation took place during élevage, bringing texture while preserving the wine’s freshness and detailed expression of the vineyard.

100% Pinot Noir. Alcohol: 13.5%. Recommended drinking window: 2029 to 2039.
