2024 Carmenere Più, Inama

Veneto, Italy

Crimson Pepper

Dark-fruited, floral and full of Veneto character, Carmenere Più shows why Inama has made Carménère such an important part of its Colli Berici story. Blackberry, blueberry and plum sit alongside violet, cocoa and white pepper, with a savoury herbal edge adding freshness and personality. The fruit is ripe but not heavy, giving the wine an appealing balance between richness and lift.

On the palate, it is supple, fresh and finely structured, with dark berry fruit, spice and smooth, integrated tannins. The Merlot softens the edges of the Carménère, while partial ageing in used barriques adds texture without covering the fruit.

We love this wine as it's a distinctive Italian red that is generous, food-friendly and a little different from the usual Veneto choices.

For when: A relaxed dinner needs a savoury Italian red with dark fruit, spice and easy charm.

Pairs with: Grilled pork, salami, bigoli with duck, polenta and mushrooms, pasta e fagioli, roast vegetables, hard cheeses or chargrilled aubergine.

Carménère Più matters because it sits at the heart of Inama’s work with Carménère in the Colli Berici. The variety has been grown in the area for more than a century, and Inama has helped give it a clearer regional identity through careful vineyard work and a style that emphasises freshness, spice and drinkability rather than weight. It is an excellent introduction to the estate’s red-wine side.

Inama is one of the Veneto’s most respected family estates, best known for helping elevate Soave Classico and for building one of Italy’s most distinctive modern projects around Carménère. Giuseppe Inama began purchasing vineyard parcels in Soave during the 1960s, initially focusing on old-vine Garganega and the volcanic hills that define the family’s white wines.

Stefano Inama took over the winemaking direction in 1992 and later expanded the family’s work into the Colli Berici, where warmer, drier conditions and limestone-clay soils provide an ideal setting for red varieties. The third generation, Matteo, Alessio and Luca, is now involved in the estate, continuing a family approach built around site, freshness and careful vineyard management.

Inama’s red wines are especially interesting because they give Carménère an identity beyond Chile. The family has worked with the variety for decades in the Colli Berici, using regenerative farming and restrained cellar work to emphasise fruit, spice and texture. Carmenere Più is the most accessible expression of that project and a strong introduction to a less familiar side of the Veneto.

The 2024 Carmenere Più is made from Carménère 85% and Merlot 15%. The fruit comes from Inama’s estate vineyards in the Colli Berici, where limestone formations and red clay soils sit in a warmer, drier climate than nearby Soave Classico. The vineyards are Guyot trained and hand harvested.

Inama has farmed these vineyards regeneratively for around two decades. Herbicides and chemical fertilisers have not been used since 2009, with natural ground cover, lightweight machinery and careful pruning used to support soil health and vine balance. The wine is not certified organic or biodynamic.

The grapes are destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled vats for around 20 to 25 days. The wine then matures for 12 months, with 50% aged in barriques previously used three or four times and 50% kept in stainless steel. Alcohol is 13%, residual sugar is 0.6 g/L, and the wine is bottled under DIAM.

The 2024 vintage was cooler and more challenging than recent years in north-east Italy, but late-summer rain and temperature shifts supported final ripening and helped produce juicy, mid-weight reds with balancing freshness. That character suits Carmenere Più particularly well: dark berry fruit, cocoa and pepper are framed by soft tannins and lively acidity. It is ready to drink now, with enough savoury structure to make it especially useful with pork, mushrooms and traditional Veneto cooking.
