2024 Carmenere Limited Edition, Viña Perez Cruz

Maipo Valley, Chile

Ripe black plum and blackberry lead an expressive aroma, lifted by cracked black pepper and Carménère’s distinctive leafy freshness. Subtle savoury herbs sit beneath the fruit, giving this deep, inviting red definition without taking away from its generous personality.

Velvety and rounded on the palate, with concentrated dark fruit, vibrant acidity and well-shaped tannins. The texture is smooth and supple, while peppery spice and gentle oak carry the long, balanced finish. This is polished, characterful Maipo Carménère that delivers both richness and freshness at an excellent level.

For when: A slow-cooked supper deserves something generous.

Pairs with: Grilled lamb, beef empanadas, chicken curry, tomato-based pasta, roasted vegetables or blue cheese.

Viña Pérez Cruz’s Limited Edition range explores the versatility of its Liguai Estate in the Andean foothills of Maipo. Carménère ripens particularly late here, benefiting from warm sunshine, cool mountain air and rocky soils that bring concentration while preserving freshness.

Viña Pérez Cruz is a family-owned estate rooted in the southern reaches of Chile’s Maipo Valley. Its story began when Pablo Pérez and Mariana Cruz discovered a promising site at the foot of the Andes around six decades ago. The land’s difficult, mineral-rich soils and Mediterranean climate provided the foundations for a winery focused primarily on structured, expressive red wines.

The modern winery was completed in 2001 and received its first harvest the following year. Designed by Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle, its timber construction, natural ventilation and integration with the surrounding landscape make it both an efficient winemaking facility and a striking piece of architecture. All the estate’s vineyards and production facilities are located at Fundo Liguai.

Technical director Germán Lyon has led the winemaking since the inaugural 2002 vintage. Precision viticulture, individual vineyard parcels and carefully judged maturation help retain the character of Maipo Andes while bringing polish and consistency to each bottle.

The 2024 is a blend of 97% Carménère and 3% Petit Verdot from the Liguai Estate in Maipo Andes. The vineyard lies around 450 metres above sea level, between the Maipo River and the Arroyo El Inca, approximately 40 kilometres south of Santiago.

The vines grow in rocky alluvial and colluvial soils formed from ancient Andean material. Excellent drainage encourages concentration in the berries, while cold winds from the mountain foothills and a marked difference between day and night temperatures help preserve acidity and natural freshness.

Harvested on 10 April, the fruit was fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperatures of 24 to 28°C. The wine matured for 14 months, with 80% aged in first- and second-use French oak and 20% in second-use American oak.

The finished wine has 13.3% alcohol, total acidity of 5.27 g/l and a pH of 3.58. It will benefit from around 30 minutes’ aeration and is best served at 16 to 18°C.
