2024 Biodynamic Chenin Blanc, Reyneke
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
Granite Glow
Pale gold and wonderfully composed, this opens with quince, white pear and nectarine, followed by lemon peel, fresh ginger and delicate white flowers. Hints of hay, fynbos and crushed stone bring a quieter, more savoury dimension, giving the wine real personality without losing its graceful fruit.
The palate begins softly, then gathers focus through bright citrus, fine acidity and a gentle phenolic grip. Lees ageing adds texture, while large foudre and amphora preserve the purity of the old-vine Chenin. The finish is long, lightly saline and edged with apple pith. There is genuine depth here, but no heaviness, making this a rewarding bottle now with the precision and structure to develop further.
For when Lunch runs late and the second bottle needs to be the clever one.
Pairs with Roast chicken with lemon, grilled hake, lobster, sushi, mild coconut curry or baked goat’s cheese.
Reyneke is one of South Africa’s biodynamic pioneers, farming its Polkadraai Hills estate as a complete living ecosystem. This Chenin comes from the property’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1974 and 1976, and captures the estate’s philosophy beautifully: healthy soils, minimal intervention and a clear, unforced expression of place.
