2024 Biodynamic Chenin Blanc, Reyneke

Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

Granite Glow

Pale gold and wonderfully composed, this opens with quince, white pear and nectarine, followed by lemon peel, fresh ginger and delicate white flowers. Hints of hay, fynbos and crushed stone bring a quieter, more savoury dimension, giving the wine real personality without losing its graceful fruit.

The palate begins softly, then gathers focus through bright citrus, fine acidity and a gentle phenolic grip. Lees ageing adds texture, while large foudre and amphora preserve the purity of the old-vine Chenin. The finish is long, lightly saline and edged with apple pith. There is genuine depth here, but no heaviness, making this a rewarding bottle now with the precision and structure to develop further.

For when Lunch runs late and the second bottle needs to be the clever one.

Pairs with Roast chicken with lemon, grilled hake, lobster, sushi, mild coconut curry or baked goat’s cheese.

Reyneke is one of South Africa’s biodynamic pioneers, farming its Polkadraai Hills estate as a complete living ecosystem. This Chenin comes from the property’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1974 and 1976, and captures the estate’s philosophy beautifully: healthy soils, minimal intervention and a clear, unforced expression of place.

Reyneke is rooted in the historic Uitzicht farm, first established in 1863 and positioned above Stellenbosch with views towards False Bay. Led by owner and viticulturist Johan Reyneke, the estate has become one of South Africa’s leading biodynamic producers, treating the vineyard as part of a wider living farm rather than an isolated crop.

Vines coexist with pasture, vegetable gardens, animals, compost-making and areas of wilderness. Synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are avoided, while companion plants, natural predators and biodynamic preparations help build healthier soils and a more resilient ecosystem. The farm is independently certified, giving substance to an approach that is both environmentally thoughtful and uncompromising about wine quality.

That restraint continues in the cellar. Fermentations rely on naturally occurring yeasts, with no routine acid adjustment or unnecessary fermentation aids. The aim is not to manufacture a particular flavour, but to preserve the character created in the vineyard. Customers can trust Reyneke for wines that combine ethical farming with genuine precision, texture and regional identity. The 2024 Chenin Blanc is an especially compelling expression of that philosophy.

This is 100% Chenin Blanc from Reyneke’s oldest estate vineyards, planted in 1974 and 1976 on the granite-derived soils of the Polkadraai Hills. The grapes were harvested by hand and cooled overnight before pressing.

Spontaneous fermentation took place in 2,500-litre oak foudres and 500-litre amphorae. The wine remained on its lees in these vessels for ten months, building texture without masking the fruit. Sulphur was added for the first time only after racking and shortly before bottling.

Alcohol is 13%. Residual sugar is 1.7g/L, with a pH of 3.34 and total acidity of 4.8g/L. The wine is certified organic and biodynamic, including Demeter certification, and is suitable for vegans.
