Juicy raspberry and bright red fruit rise from the glass, joined by floral notes, cracked black pepper and a subtle earthy edge. Aromatic and expressive, this shows Syrah’s savoury side without sacrificing the generous fruit and immediate appeal of the Cape.

Silky and medium-bodied, with vibrant berry fruit, supple tannins and a fresh, peppery finish. There is enough depth to satisfy serious Syrah drinkers, but the wine remains lively, polished and wonderfully easy to enjoy. A fresh South African expression that delivers far more personality than its relaxed style suggests.

Big Sky comes from Overberg in the Cape South Coast, a rugged landscape shaped by mountains and cooling maritime influences. These conditions suit Syrah particularly well, helping retain the acidity, fragrance and peppery definition that keep the wine fresh and energetic

Tumbleweed is part of the adventurous portfolio created by Bruce Jack Wines. The range celebrates the wild, open landscapes of South Africa and the growers who work in some of the Cape’s more remote vineyard areas. Big Sky draws its identity from Overberg, where rolling hills, mountain ranges and coastal influences provide a distinctive setting for Syrah.

Bruce Jack studied winemaking at Roseworthy in Australia before gaining experience across France, Spain, Australia and the United States. He returned to South Africa and founded Flagstone in 1998, establishing a reputation for expressive wines, unusual vineyard discoveries and an open-minded approach to production. Since 2002, he has worked closely with winemaker Marlize Beyers, whose international experience and technical precision have helped shape the team’s style.

The philosophy combines careful site selection with gentle handling and a focus on drinkability. The wines are generous and characterful, but freshness and balance remain central. Tumbleweed offers an accessible introduction to that approach, presenting distinctive regional wines without unnecessary formality. A percentage of profits from Bruce Jack Wines supports the HeadStart Trust, which funds education and music programmes within disadvantaged rural communities.

The 2024 Big Sky is made from 100% Syrah grown in Overberg, part of South Africa’s Cape South Coast. The region’s combination of warm sunshine, elevated terrain and cooling maritime air encourages ripe fruit while helping the grapes retain freshness and aromatic definition.

The finished wine is dry and medium-bodied, with 13.5% alcohol. It is sealed under screwcap and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
