2024 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc, Spoke
Marlborough, New Zealand
The Coastal Minimalist
The 2024 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc from Spoke Wines is a striking expression of coastal Marlborough, shaped by the cooler, wind-kissed climate of the Awatere Valley. Spoke is the visionary collaboration between Liam Steevenson MW and Marlborough winemaker Ben Glover, whose decades of experience in the region are channelled into site-focused, expressive wines that reflect both land and hand.
Refined, bright and beautifully focused, this cooler-climate Sauvignon Blanc opens with white peach, crisp apple and ripe pear, lifted by lime zest, kiwi fruit and delicate white blossom. Subtle notes of pea shoot, boxwood and fresh herbs give the wine its distinctive Awatere character, bringing savoury definition to the generous fruit.
The palate is lean, energetic and wonderfully precise, with lemon, lime and crunchy orchard fruit driven by mouth-watering acidity. There is enough texture to soften the edges, but the overall impression is one of purity, freshness and restraint. The finish is long, taut and gently mineral, making this a more composed alternative to the overtly tropical style of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
For when: you want Marlborough freshness with a little more elegance and restraint.
Pairs with: oysters, grilled prawns, goat’s cheese, asparagus risotto, sushi or Thai green papaya salad.
The Awatere Valley is cooler, drier and windier than much of Marlborough, producing Sauvignon Blanc with naturally vivid acidity and a distinctive herbal, mineral character. These more demanding conditions create smaller crops and wines that favour citrus, orchard fruit and precision over extravagant tropical richness.
This is not your typical tropical-style Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is more restrained, more European in style.
