2024 'Alto Molino' Malbec, Piattelli Vineyards
Cafayate Salta, Argentina
Ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry lead the aroma, joined by violet, black pepper and a touch of dried herbs. Generous and inviting, it has the deep fruit expected from Argentine Malbec, lifted by the freshness and perfume of its remarkable high-altitude origins.
The palate is smooth and fruit-filled, with supple tannins, lively acidity and a satisfying medium-to-full-bodied shape. Dark berries and plum carry into a gently spiced finish, giving the wine plenty of flavour without becoming heavy. An easygoing but characterful Cafayate Malbec that delivers impressive personality and value.
For when: The barbecue is smoking, and the first steaks are nearly ready.
Pairs with: Grilled steak, beef empanadas, lamb chops, smoky burgers, aubergine, beef casserole or mature cheeses.
Alto Molino comes from Piattelli’s vineyards in Cafayate, more than 1,795 metres above sea level. Its name means “high mill”, referring to the old grain mill built by Jesuits in 1665 near the entrance to the estate. Intense mountain sunlight and dramatically cool nights give the wine ripe fruit, vivid colour and balancing freshness.
