2024 Viognier, Ktima Gerovassiliou

Epanomi, Greece

Golden Aegean Silk

This is one of the best Viogniers made outside the Northern Rhone.

Fragrant, textured and quietly exotic, the 2024 Viognier from Ktima Gerovassiliou shows this wonderfully expressive grape in a style that feels both sunlit and polished. Peach, apricot and ripe pear rise first, followed by jasmine, white blossom and a gentle flicker of spice. There is richness here, certainly, but it is carried with elegance rather than excess, the palate broad and supple, yet lifted by freshness and drawn out by a subtle smoky note on the finish. Perfumed, poised and beautifully complete, this is Viognier with real class, more silk than swagger.

For when: the table is full of good food and the afternoon has no intention of ending early.
Pairs with: grilled prawns, crab, lobster, roast chicken, or saffron-laced dishes.
If this wine were a place: a whitewashed terrace above the Aegean, with sun on stone and jasmine in the evening air.

Ktima Gerovassiliou is one of Greece’s benchmark estates, based in Epanomi in northern Greece, where Viognier has become one of the winery’s signature varieties since it was first planted there in 1993. The estate is known for combining meticulous vineyard work with a polished, terroir-conscious style, and this bottling captures that beautifully, taking Viognier’s natural generosity and giving it shape, freshness and a distinctly Mediterranean sense of place.

Ktima Gerovassiliou is the brainchild of Evangelos Gerovassiliou. He initiated the revival of the family vineyard by planting the nearly extinct Malagousia in 1981. At Ktima Gerovassiliou, the single, private 74-hectare vineyard is cultivated with great care and enthusiasm, which leads to constant research and experimentation with Greek and international varieties. New technological advances blend well with tradition throughout the vine growing and vinification processes to produce high-quality wines that carry all the distinct characteristics of the terroir of Epanomi. The climate is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers, tempered by sea breezes. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by the sea, which is three kilometres away, while its west side faces the Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus and the beaches of Pieria. The vines are grown in soils which are mainly sandy with a few clayey substrates and calcareous rocks. It is rich in sea fossils, as the surrounding hilly area was formed by sea deposits. The floral variety of Viognier was initially planted on the estate in 1993, under the supervision of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The vineyard is cultivated in compliance with ecologically sustainable management practices.

Made with minimal intervention, vinification started with skin-contact maceration to extract flavours and aromatics at controlled temperatures of 8°C. The grapes were then
barrel-fermented in French oak, of which 20% was new, 80% was older, to impart subtle complexity. The wine was matured on its fine lees for approximately four months with regular bâtonnage to enhance the rich creaminess and texture.
